Everything you need to know about sunscreen tablets

Everything you need to know about sunscreen tablets 1

By now you’ll know that the sun is our skin’s number one enemy. Not only does it put us at risk of developing skin cancer, but it’s also the biggest cause of premature ageing. Enter fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, an uneven skin tone and texture, eek! Applying SPF every day (yes, even when it’s cloudy outside!) is absolutely vital, but what about taking a sunscreen tablet? Can we replace the tedious task of rubbing lotion over our bodies with the simple act of swallowing a pill?

How it works
Traditional sunscreen is either physical or chemical. A physical sunscreen uses mineral-based ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide to physically block UV rays. It stays on top of the skin to deflect UV rays away from the skin. A chemical sunscreen contains chemical compounds that absorb UV rays. These compounds change UV rays into heat which is released from the skin. Simple, right?

Ingestible sunscreen works a little differently. It contains antioxidants, vitamins and photoprotectors that help protect our bodies against harmful free radicals that occur when UV light interacts with our skin cells. So essentially, they help our bodies fight off damaging UV rays by giving us the nutrients we need to protect our skin naturally, from the inside out. They may help our skin to improve its resistance against UV damage. They don’t, however, offer the extent of sun protection that SPF lotions do.

Will I still get a sunburn?
Though ingestible sun care products are handy, they won’t protect you from sunburn and they’re certainly not a miracle product. Unfortunately, there is no equal substitute for traditional sunscreen and protective clothing like hats, sunglasses and long sleeves. Because ingestible sunscreen is rich in antioxidants, it offers anti-redness and anti-inflammatory benefits, meaning it may help shorten and minimise the effects of a sunburn. But don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s a quick fix after a burn – even a mild sunburn can cause severe damage to your skin.

Our verdict
We recommend supplementing your sun protection with ingestible sun care rather than relying on it to do the job on its own. Think of it as an extra step on top of your daily routine – it’s by no means a replacement for traditional sun care products. It’s a great investment for times when you know you’ll be spending more time outside than usual, like when on holiday.

If you’re keen to give it a go, we recommend trying Heliocare’s Ultra Oral Capsules. They contain Fernblock, which is a tropical Central American fern with proven UV protection capabilities, as well as antioxidants like vitamins C and E to fight free radicals.
