Fantastic face oils

Friday, 28 June 2013

A couple of years ago the word “oil” was completely taboo when it came to skin care. We didn’t apply anything to our faces unless it was labelled “oil-free” and we made sure our moisturisers had lightweight formulations. In the past year or two, the entire beauty industry changed its tune.

With the rise in “super oils” (think argan, lavender and avocado), we’ve seen cosmetic houses across the globe create hair oils, body oils, facial oils, and even all-over-oils, designed to promote youth, hydrate and do just about everything you could dream of!

Face oils

This winter, we’re loving face oils. Consisting of 100% pure natural oils (either blended or single) they absorb incredibly fast, despite their oily texture. Filled with antioxidants and vitamins many of them act as anti-inflammatories and have a calming effect on the skin.

Face oils hydrate better than many moisturisers as they are lipophilic (fat-loving), which means they pass through the lipid layer of ours skins faster and prevents moisture loss and dehydration. This makes them particularly great for dry skins, ageing skins and mature skin.

But with so many on the market, how should you go about choosing one? If you’re looking for optimum hydration, look for a product that contains or consists of argan oil. Avocado oil is good for rosacea as it has a calming effect, whilst pomegranate is filled with vitamin C, making it great for fighting pigmentation. If you have oily skin or breakouts, opt for antiseptic lavender oil.

Apply a few drops of oil to your skin after cleansing and toning, and follow with your usual sunscreen.

Here, a few of our favourite face oils:

1. Comfort Zone Renight Vitamin Integrator, R535

2. Clarins Santal Face Treatment Oil, R410

3. Sh’Zen Natural Essence Skin Life Oil, R319

4. Dr. Hauschka Normalizing Day Oil, R422

5. Justine Tissue Oil Facial Treatment with Rosehip, R240

6. Decléor Aromessence Neroli, R555

The Decleor one is fantastic! I have used it before and it helped my dehydrated skin tonnes!! I want to now try the Dr. Hauschka Normalizing Day Oil – although I prefer using oils at night to help repair, nourish and hydrate my dehydrated skin.

I have always been way too afraid to put any oil on to my face, but I think I will give it a go. I use the Justine tissue oil on my skin so maybe I’ll try the facial treatment.

    Hi RoseAngel
As explained in the article, if you are prone to breakouts and acne, a lavender oil would be best. If you’re uncertain about the suitability of a product for your skin, it’s best to consult your dermatologist.

Will it be ok to use on of these oils for acne prone skin? I have a lot of active breakouts and dark marks from previous pimples so obviously it will help with marks but will it make my adult acne flair up? My current skin care range is eucerin an have been on it for three days now. The full available system ???? Please can someone enlighten me

I’m currently using the Khiel’s midnight recovery oil which I love. Very keen to give the Sh’Zen one a bash as well, not that pricy.

Even 1 and three quarter litres of water a day does not help my skin. Only makes me run often. Maybe this can help my very dehydrated skin.
