We thought we would examine the available styles and conduct some (highly unclinical) trials to find out just how hairy a man should be.
The full beard
The full beard really separates the men from the boys, and, if done properly, can create that distinguished look in a flash. A beard also hides a multitude of sins: if their were issues with acne, the less-than-perfect skin is covered. A weak jawline or a pointy chin can also be ‘corrected’ by wearing the right type of beard, creating an optical illusion of width and bulk where needed: Ryan Gosling and Christian Bale are perfect examples. A round face will be more suited to a short, round beard, while square faces should stick to a short, full one. A regular date with the clippers will keep that beard in line.
Our panel said:
• I quite like a closely cropped beard. I don’t know if it’s to do with my father issues, though.
• I think a beard is scruffy and scratchy and slightly scary.
