How to look after your skin this festive season

How to look after your skin this festive season 1

The end of the year calls for an opportunity to sit back and relax – but for most of us, it’s also a time for festivities. From end-of-year parties, to Christmas and New Year, there’s never a shortage of reasons to celebrate. But with that comes late nights and over-indulging – fun for you, but not so fun for your skin. So how do you ensure that your skin survives the silly season? By making a few small changes to your usual party habits. We asked Skin Renewal for some tips:

Drink plenty of water
You should be doing this every day regardless, but now is the time to up your water intake. Drink eight glasses a day to ensure your skin stays hydrated and plump. And replace sugary fizzy drinks with sparkling water – your skin will love you for it.

Never go to bed with your makeup on
No matter what time you get home, don’t ever get into bed without removing your makeup and washing your face. Those extra few minutes of sleep are not worth the clogged pores and dehydrated skin you’ll wake up with the next morning!

Stick to your routine and up your moisture
If you already have an established skincare routine, now is the time to really stick to it. If not, start asap! A good quality cleanser, serum and moisturiser goes a long way. Be sure to apply a moisturiser to the rest of your body too – the sun and sea / pool water is known to dry out the skin.

Go easy on rich foods and alcohol
Events like year-end parties, Christmas and New Year calls for delicious foods, but it’s also the time in which we over-eat and indulge in more alcohol than we usually would. After all, what’s the festive season without roast potatoes and champagne?! It’s difficult to abstain completely, so our advice would be to eat and drink cleverly. Have a glass of water in between alcoholic drinks and load your plate with veggies and salads, not just meats. Now is also the time to invest in a good quality probiotic and multivitamin. Remember, the gut plays a major role in the appearance of the skin, so the healthier the food you put into the body, the healthier your skin will be.

Slap on that SPF
SPF is not just for the beach or poolside; it’s an essential for every day, regardless of the weather. Be sure to apply at least an SPF30 to your face in the morning and reapply throughout the day. And don’t forget about the lesser exposed areas of the body like the ears and behind the neck.

Treat yourself to a facial or peel
There’s nothing like a peel or facial to revive the skin and give it that sought-after glow. Pay a visit to your nearest Skin Renewal branch for a facial treatment suited to your skin concerns (don’t worry if you don’t know what those are, one of their experienced therapists will help you with that). You’ll be sure to leave there glowing, and they’ll give you some great advice on how to look after your skin too.

Remember to relax
If you’re anything like us, you’ll be exhausted by the end of the year. Stress has a nasty way of showing up on the skin, so it’s really important to take the holiday time to unwind and de-stress. Whether it’s sleeping, reading, meditating or watching films, be sure to spend some time doing the things you find relaxing, to ensure you start the new year well-rested, and with skin that says as much!
