In good grace

In good graceBecause we love beautiful things here at BeautySouthAfrica (it’s all in the name!), we love a fragrance with a beautiful mission. Grace perfume was developed in aid of the Red Light Anti-Human Trafficking Initiative. The mission of Grace? To enhance a woman’s beauty and uniqueness as well as to encourage self-esteem and self-worth. The perfume’s creators, Nicky Akal and Jo-Anne Gibbon, have committed to giving 10 percent of the retail price of every perfume sold to the Red Light foundation in hopes of raising awareness and helping the victims of human trafficking.

Grace perfume

Co-creators Akal and Gibbon initially wanted to create something that would have a positive impact on the community. They decided to create their own fragrance to highlight human trafficking and partnered with Jean Guthrie, an expert in the fragrance industry and a leading brand in South Africa. Collaborating with Jean Guthrie Beauty Care on the fragrance, design of the bottle and artwork, the Grace perfume came to life. As Akal and Gibbon state, “Grace was birthed by a unique marriage of passions – a love for fine fragrance and a desire to effect change.”

Grace has a citrusy, oriental and floral fragrance, boasting top notes of tea, blackcurrant, bergamot and raspberry. Other notes include jasmine, rose, freesia, purple orchid, sandalwood, cedar wood, patchouli, amber, vanilla, white musk and benzoin.

Red Light foundation

The Red Light foundation came into being in 2008 and is a recognised leader in combating human trafficking and the sex worker industry. Their international focus is on prevention, protection, prosecution and partnerships; and they enforce this by frequently visiting schools to educate girls on the extent of human trafficking. They have also developed the Inkululeko (meaning ‘Freedom’ in Zulu) project, which aims to assist abused women and survivors of not only human trafficking, but also other violent, sexual and domestic crimes. Inkululeko also provides beauty, clothing and craft packages to women in safe houses, who are dependent on donations and funds received from donors.
