Is cleansing, toning and moisturising enough?

Is the three-step skincare system of cleansing, toning and moisturising enough? Why or why not? And do you recommend extra steps and products?

cleanse, tone, moisturise

Dr Maureen Allem from Skin, Body & Health Renewal responds:

“I wouldn’t quite classify those particular three steps as the most important. Let me put it this way. If you are 100% happy with your skin as it is, and you have no concerns (no pigmentation, no breakouts, no areas of dryness, no sagging etc), then just doing the VERY basics every day are OK. So cleansing, moisturising and SPF every single day would be the bare minimum to maintain your skin. If you have started noticing areas of concern, then just the basics are not going to give you any improvement. You would need to include something that specifically targets the concern on your skin. In some cases (such as acne and deep pigmentation), it’s not even the skin itself that is causing the issue, it’s hormones and imbalanced gut issues, so in that case, we need to get those under control to fix what’s happening on the skin. So do I recommend extra steps/products? YES, if you look at your skin and there is an area or concern that bothers you, then absolutely. If there is absolutely NOTHING to fix, then no… Just do the basics to maintain your flawless skin.”

  1. I like this answer. If you don’t need it, don’t complicate things and stick to what works. Only use other products in you need to treat something.
