Is it better to exfoliate dry or wet skin?

Tuesday, 16 July 2013

Exfoliating wet and dry skinIt depends if you are exfoliating the body or the face. I would not do any form of dry exfoliation on the face. I prefer the use of exfoliating enzymes for facial skin and these can only work in the presence of moisture. For the body, some people really like body brushing (which is dry), and there is no problem with this. Some people prefer treating the body with scrubs and enzymes with water and this is also very effective. I guess it comes down to personal preference and what your skin enjoys and reacts best with. Some skins get very irritated with scrubs and prefer enzymes, some skins feel dry and itchy after dry exfoliations and prefer scrubs with water… so it really comes down to what works best for YOUR skin.

I’m a big fan of dry body brushing using a medium size natural brush. It not only stimulates lymph drainage to help the body get rid of toxins but also exfoliates dead skin cells. Light but firm brushing strokes all over the body, face excluded, focusing on lymph drainage areas such as under the armpits, makes the skin tingle and feels fantastic. Be sure to drink a large glass of water afterwards to expel the toxins!

With face I would always exfoliate using water or even better steam. If you don’t have a steamer at home, it’s best to exfoliate after hot shower or bath to soften skin cells and open pores.

I do agree about preferably using wet method on the face yet there are a few products on the market by well known companies that you apply the exfoliatar (including enzyme ones) to dry skin and then add water after. Always follow the recommended directions of the product house else you can alter the effectiveness of the product.

I love dry body brushing. It is like you can feel the dead skin coming off, but I prefer wet facial scrubs as the skin on your face is much more sensitive.

I have exfoliated on dry skin in a hurry before. Oops!

I would never exfoliate on a dry face since the skin is so much more sensitive and thin. But dry brushing every now and then on the body feels great. I just find that the chest area needs to be done with a very light hand since the skin is still quite delicate.

I used to swear by facial scrubs until i found the best face wash for my skin. It renders facial exfoliation unnecessary now! Fantastic!

I use the Dermalogica gentle cream exfoliant, so even if I apply it to dry skin its not damaging to my skin like a scrub exfoliator.

Good advice! Go for a more creamy scrub that will be more gentler on your skin.

Face scrub and a little water works the best, or you end up pulling the skin if the scrub is dry.
