Laser hair removal

Laser hair removalLaser hair removal is the most effective treatment available and is medically proven to give a permanent hair reduction. The procedure is quick and easy and a few treatments can reduce the hair anywhere on the face and body.

Helpful tips to ensure effective hair removal results:

• It is imperative that the hair is present in the shaft (no waxing or plucking – although shaving is allowed) as the laser uses laser light energy to destroy the germ cell by heating the hair in the base of the hair follicle.

• Laser hair removal only treats the hair follicle when it is in the anagen or “growing” phase, necessitating treatments every six to eight weeks.

• There is some discomfort during the procedure which most people find to be mild and tolerable.

• Laser hair removal works best on light skin with dark hair. It is not as effective for blonde, white or grey hair.

• Black skin responds well to only one type of laser, the Nd: YAG or Coolglide Excel laser system

• Best results for laser hair removal are obtained when there is no previous suntan or sun exposure on the treated areas. If there is sun exposure, lower settings have to be used which makes the treatment less effective.

Ingrown hairs can safely be treated in all skin types within two sessions using the Nd: YAG, a Class 1V medical laser system

TREATMENTS

Usually eight to 10 treatment sessions are necessary for permanent hair reduction. Touch-up treatments annually or biannually are required to maintain results.

COST:

The total cost depends on the size of the area to be treated as well as factors like hair density and number of treatments required.

A proper laser hair removal system such as the Cutera Coolglide and Excel laser system cannot be compared to an entry level IPL system. An IPL hair removal device is not a laser and cannot be used on darker skin types.

I have used laser every where on my body. The only problem is you have to have the treatment at least six times and they don’t come cheap.

I had laser done on my underarms and it was a breeze. I just felt like I was being tickled. My friend had some chest hair removed and he howled in pain, haha.

I did laser hair removal last year – it was really brilliant. I did underarms and face. About a year later and I still have very little hair under my arms, face is a bit different but that’s hormone-related.
I got a groupon deal for 10 treatments at a salon and I researched the type of laser they used before I bought the deal. It was one of the best ones so I went ahead. and was not disappointed.
But without a deal, it seems prohibitively expensive to me – especially when you have to maintain it with regular treatments.
So watch the deal sites, make sure you know what laser they are using and then go for it.

I’ve lasered most areas: bikini, legs, underarms, even some areas of my face. This has to be the best beauty treatment I’ve ever treated myself to. It’s effective although very costly. I certainly don’t regret it – but I do wish I’d started sooner!

    Hi Stephanie

Yes, men can certainly go for laser hair removal, but as their hair grows a bit denser, the procedure may be slightly different than when women go. You may find that they need to go for a few more sessions.

Thank you for the article… This is very informative, especially as a warning against the cheaper, back door laser ” specialists”. Can men also go for laser removal, i.e on their faces, considering how densely their hair grows?

    Hi Sloanie

It can get quite pricey, but it depends on how many sessions you require. You have to weigh it up with your normal waxing / shaving costs to see which is better suited to you (and also consider the money you may save in the long run).

Thank you Dr.Allem for this informative article. I honestly never believed in laser because someone i know had it done and it gave her white patches on her fair skin. on the other hand my friends mom swears by it, i guess it also depends on where you get it done and what system that professional is using so i would actually research beforehand.
