Friday, 22 September 2017

Because there are so many local beauty brands, we decided to share more of the proudly South African products we love. Get silky soft skin, try out some homegrown products and keep our flag flying high with these brands.

African Extracts

In a nutshell

The story began in 2000 when Cape Town entrepreneur, Rob Tiffin developed a rooibos-based skin-care range for the European market. His company, Scentpac, manufactures a wide range of private label skin-care and gift sets for leading retailers. His wife, journalist and former beauty editor Sarah Hetherington, helped with marketing. The range was launched in 2004 in South African pharmacies. Thousands of women tried and liked the products and spread the word.

Hometown

All the magic happens at African Extracts in Paarden Eiland, Cape Town.

Key ingredients

This local brand is inspired by the richness of our natural heritage. South Africans have grown up with rooibos and always known that it’s good for us. More and more research is proving its amazing health benefits. The high levels of antioxidants and other properties protect cells from the damaging effects of our lifestyles and environment. They even lower the risk of serious diseases. This has inspired them to develop an affordable range based on bio-active rooibos extracts.

Did you know?

The business was started 14 years ago to export Rooibos Skincare. It has provided employment and opportunities for a growing team and is made in a state-of-the-art facility.

Fun fact

In 2014 the rooibos shrub was awarded Geographic Indicator Status by the European Union, which means it can only be called rooibos if it comes from the small area of the Cederberg, Western Cape where it grows naturally.

Biggest seller

The Classic Care Day Cream SPF 15, R58,74, was the first African Extracts product and remains the top-seller.

Proudly South African claim to fame

The rooibos extract is what makes this brand proudly homegrown. The Bio-Active extract is made from fresh, green, unfermented rooibos at source in Clanwilliam, which preserves the highest possible levels of antioxidants.

Optiphi

In a nutshell

Skin Rejuvenation Technologies is part of the Southern Group, which researches, develops and creates all kinds of medical devices and applications. Thanks to their expertise in bio-medicals they came up with the best ways to rehabilitate the skin. The result is the Optiphi range, now a complete anti-ageing solution.

Hometown

Everything is developed at their head office and laboratories in Irene, Centurion.

Key ingredients

All the honey used in the products is sourced locally to support the South African bee community.

Did you know?

Optiphi focuses on the skin cells. To understand the process of Positive Homeostatic Influence (PHI), you need to know a bit about homeostasis – not as scary as it sounds. Homeostasis is the housekeeping which a cell, tissue, system or organism constantly performs. It maintains internal balance by adjusting its physiological processes. PHI is also the symbol for the Golden Ratio (1.618) which is seen in nature and plays an important part in mathematics, architecture, art and music.

Biggest seller

The facial cleansers are the cream of the crop. It’s a six-in-one product and pH balanced, so no need for a toner. It cleanses gently yet effectively. The salicylic acid lightly exfoliates the skin while cleansing. The cleanser can also be used as a spot treatment on breakouts.

Top tip

For the best results, be sure to follow the instructions on the packaging and the advice of your Optiphi® therapist or doctor.

Proudly South African claim to fame

Placecol

In a nutshell

Placecol was started 36 years ago in Ermelo by a beautiful and courageous beauty therapist, Elma Mckenzie. The company is living her legacy and have upgraded the entire range to be one of the best in the world.

Key ingredients

The Placecol Illuminé range for more mature skin includes myramyze from the myrothamnus flabellifolia, which grows in the Magaliesberg area in Pretoria. It’s exported to Switzerland where the active ingredient is extracted. This is a resurrection plant, which means it can survive long periods of drought in a completely desiccated state. Among other things, myramyze revives mature skin and it protects skin lipids from oxidation.

Fun fact

Elma Mckenzie still has a spa in Ermelo and is considered an expert in skin and beauty treatments. She is an ambassador for the Placecol brand.

Biggest seller

The Placecol Clean Start Facial Wash, R295, is a firm favourite. The Placecol Illuminé Night Restructure, R595, is also popular. This active moisturiser contains anti-oxidants and retinol to assist with restructuring the skin on a cellular level, strengthening the skin matrix and improving elasticity.
