Make your own face masks for glowing skin on a budget

Make your own face masks for glowing skin on a budget 1

Battling an oily T-panel? Wanting to boost your hydration levels? Whatever your skin issue, we might have a mask to help you sort it out. And the best bit? You can make them from simple ingredients you’re likely to have in your kitchen.

Get glowing!

Whether you’ve got a wedding, a date or maybe you’ve just looked in the mirror and saw a drab, tired face looking back at you – this radiance-boosting mask will help give you a little extra sparkle and help you on your way to your glow-up.

Best for: All skin types

Beauty benefits: Skin will appear more radiant, elastic and soft to the touch.

Ingredients: One minced yellow or red pepper (remove skin), one beaten egg white, one teaspoon sour cream.

Why they work: Pepper can boost microcirculation, egg white tightens and sour cream contains lactic acid that can gently exfoliate the dull, dead layers of your skin to reveal a brighter-looking complexion.

Method: Mix all ingredients together and apply the mixture to clean, dry skin, avoiding the eye area. Leave it on for about 15-20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water and then again with cool water immediately afterwards.

Tame the oil

There is nothing worse than seeing yourself in a photo and you’re shining like a beacon (We all know tagged pictures look way different to the one’s we post online)! It’s one thing to have a beautiful glow, but full-on shiny is not a good look. If this sounds like you, try out this DIY mask for oily skin.

Best for: Oily skin

Beauty benefits: Keeps skin soft, smooth and oil-free.

Ingredients: Half cup of uncooked oatmeal, one dollop of honey, three tablespoons lemon juice.

Why they work: Uncooked oats can absorb excess oil, honey softens and acts as a great anti-inflammatory and astringent lemon juice tightens.

Method: Mix all the ingredients together to form a paste. If it’s too dry, add more of the lemon juice or honey. Spread the mixture on the oiliest parts of your face, avoiding the eye area. Leave on for 10 minutes and enjoy the much-deserved relaxation time. Wash off with warm water, dab dry with a towel and you should be left with skin that looks soft and refreshed.

Manic Moisture Boost

Dehydrated much? Winter has a bad habit of causing dry skin and overall mayhem to your skin and hair. This is why I find it essential to exfoliate my skin and use a mask at least once or twice a week. If you can’t find one that works for you on the shelves, give this home-made mask a try…

Best for: Dry skin

Beauty benefits: Moisturises and nourishes dry, flaky skin.

Ingredients: Two egg yolks, one teaspoon honey, one teaspoon warm olive oil

Why they work: Vitamin-rich egg yolk nourishes, honey softens and cares for your skin, while the deeply moisturising olive oil can penetrate into your skin.

Method: Thoroughly mix all ingredients together. Apply to your face and throat in three layers, waiting for the layer to dry a little before applying the next one. Leave for a further 10 minutes before rinsing off with warm water. Then, rinse a second time with cool water.

While it’s great to treat yourself, taking care of your skin and body doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Try these DIY masks and share your favourite home-made masks below!

  1. Found the oatmeal mask great for sensitive skin, and it was one of the treatments used by therapist in dermalogica facials (clinical colloidal oatmeal) back when I had sensitive skin!

  2. The oatmeal , honey and lemon juice worked really well for me and left my skin feeling very soft . Thank You so much !

    1. Hi N, we asked our experts at Skin Renewal and here is their reply.

Hi, Naomi. Thank you for your question. I would imagine if you are allergic to eggs, it would probably not be advised to apply a mask containing egg to your skin. I would rather use a mask that does not contain anything that you’re allergic to. Kind regards, Dr. Allem.

  3. I love that these are so easy to do! I have all these ingredients in my kitchen! I’ve got dry skin so I definitely want to do the ‘Manic Moisture Boost’.

  4. Home masks gives that glow to my face especially the one that has honey and cinnamon.

  5. I love making home masks. One of the best is banana and honey. It’s so good if you want a glow. I also save the water from boiling rice and rinse my face. It makes my skin so soft and helps with pigmentation.
