SA’s Beauty Ed’s must-haves

Tuesday, 4 September 2012

It’s tough being a beauty editor. So many new products to try, so little time. BeautySA asked some of South Africa’s magazine beauty eds to share their must-have skincare products with us. Here’s what they have to say…

SA's Beauty Ed's must-haves

Candice Lee Kannemeyer – Fashion & Beauty Director
Fairlady

‘I’d say my must-have skincare product is my Advanced Night Repair by Esteé Lauder. I’ve been using it now for seven years and really believe it’s the reason my skin looks as good as it does. I use it morning and evening, and also apply a little during the day over my make-up to give my skin a boost.’

Catherine Zachariou – Junior Fashion & Beauty Editor
Fairlady

‘I’d have to say Dermalogica’s Special Cleansing Gel. I had problematic skin in my teens, right up until my early twenties and always struggled to find a face wash that battled my pimples without drying my skin out. That is until I discovered Dermalogica and their Special Cleansing Gel. Luckily my days of acne are long gone but I still use it religiously as it also works wonders for my sensitive skin.’

Kelli Clifton – Assistant Beauty Editor
Fairlady

‘My must-have skin product is a rich, nourishing moisturiser with a built-in SPF. I’ve been suffering with incredibly dry skin lately and know that if it wasn’t for my Esteé Lauder Day Wear Plus SPF 15, I wouldn’t have survived this winter!’

Chereen Gibson – Beauty Editor
O, The Oprah Magazine

‘Exfoliation is key in any beauty routine – without it, it doesn’t make much sense to invest in expensive lotions and potions, since they can’t be properly absorbed. As a result, my must-have skincare product has got to be QMS Medicosmetics Exfoliant Fluid. Since I started using this product on a daily basis about three months ago, I’ve noticed a vast improvement in the appearance of my skin. I suffer less breakouts and my skin’s texture seems to be smoother and more refined, not to mention the fact that I feel that my skin has a beautiful, healthy glow.’

Genevieve Gonçalves – Beauty Editor
Seventeen

‘One of my ultimate skincare must-haves is a tinted moisturiser! I love Elizabeth Arden’s Pure Finish Mineral Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15, because not only does it hydrate your skin, but it evens out your skin tone, it gives a sheer, natural coverage leaving you looking healthy and dewy AND it protects your skin from the sun! Perfect for those days when you just don’t feel like wearing foundation.’

SA's Beauty Ed's must-haves

Mathahle Stofile – Beauty Editor
Marie Claire

‘My must-have skincare product is Kiehl’s Crème de Corps Body Butter. I love that it is scent free but the best thing about it is that it is rich without being oily and it truly nourishes my skin. I become very, very dry in winter. This product does the job of leaving my skin feeling like my 10-month-old son’s after the very first application. It’s a winner.’

Helen Clemson, Contributing Beauty Editor
Women’s Health

‘I’m constantly testing out products and have many favourites this month. At the moment I’m really enjoying Eucerin’s Dry Skin Complete Repair Intensive Lotion 10% Urea. I totally neglected the skin on my body this winter and the result was itchiness and flaky legs – gross! But this body hydrator has worked a treat and my skin feels much more comfortable.’

Lynette Botha – Beauty Editor
ELLE

‘At the moment I am really loving QMS Sports Active Cream. A tinted moisturiser that I use every day instead of foundation. I love it!’

Lerato Seuoe – Editorial & Beauty Assistant
COSMOPOLITAN

‘I am in love with Bobbi Brown’s BB Cream. The light-weight formula glides on easy and gives me just enough coverage for daily use with a sheer luminous veil. It’s hands down my skincare hero of the year!’

Chanel Lee Coetzer – Beauty and Lifestyle Editor
My Wedding Day and @Leisure

‘The product that I simply can’t live without is Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant. I have one in my handbag, one next to my bed, and one in my office. It is perfect to soothe irritated skin, and a great healing agent for dry, cracked or dull-looking skin. I have psoriasis, so generally have irritated red blotches, and find that the 8-hour cream calms and heals it in no time. Simply apply a thin layer to your face in the evenings before bed and wake up with hydrated, smooth, healthy-looking skin. The fragrance-free one is a great for your husband or boyfriend (they generally don’t like the smell of the 8-hour cream – but I simply love its results!). It is fantastic after they have shaved, as the skin is generally irritated and rough.

Extra tip: Rub the skin protectant on your feet before bed, wrap them in cling film and a sock for the night, and wake up with perfect, sandal-ready feet!’

I used QMS for awhile and found it far too pricey for the limited benefits. More expensive doesn’t always mean better quality. I paid R1550 for the cream cleanser, toner and 24 hour cream.
