How many times have you made a list of new year’s resolutions, only to find yourself breaking them by the second week of January? This year, we’re all for making realistic resolutions that are easy to keep, but more importantly, that will benefit us in the long run.
So where do we start? We want the best for our skin and body, which means making a little bit of time to treat ourselves better. Not only will your body reward you by looking better, but you’ll feel much better too! Here, the six skin and body resolutions we think everyone should make for the year ahead.
1. Never go to bed with make-up on
It doesn’t matter how tired you are after a night out, it’s absolutely essential that you remove all your make-up before you go to sleep. You don’t want to wake up with clogged pores and a breakout, do you? Take the few minutes to wash and moisturise your skin when you get home. If you really can’t face your skin care routine, use a cleansing facial wipe (there are some great available from TLC, Nivea and Simple) to remove all traces of foundation and mascara.
2. Wear sunscreen every day
We know you’ve heard this a hundred times before, but it’s with good reason! The only way to prevent premature ageing, sunburn and sun damage is to wear a good quality broad spectrum sunscreen every day (even when it’s winter!). Apply it under your foundation and don’t forget the other areas of your body that are exposed like your arms, hands, ears and neck.
3. Find the right skin care routine for YOU
With so many products out there and so many articles introducing you to “must haves,” it’s extremely difficult to determine what you should buy. Try to determine what your skin needs – is it dry? Do you have pigmentation or acne? Are you trying to prevent fine lines and wrinkles? Once you know what you want and what your skin type is, you can start looking at brands and products that target your specific needs.
4. Have your moles checked
Having your moles checked out by a dermatologist annually will put your mind at ease, but will also alert you to any moles that are potentially harmful or dangerous (which in turn let’s you do something about it before it’s too late).
5. Get moving
One of the most popular resolutions has to be: get fit and lose weight. Because not everyone can be a pro athlete, we’re resolving to ‘get moving’ rather than ‘get fit.’ What does this entail? Small changes that make a difference. Take the stairs instead of the escalator, walk to the shop for bread (if it’s within a 1km radius) rather than driving and spend some time at the beach rather than in front of the television.
6. Clean your make-up brushes and body sponges
You wouldn’t eat off a dirty plate, would you? So why would you put a dirty sponge or brush on your face? Be sure to wash your make-up brushes once a week to avoid product build-up and skin breakouts, and thoroughly rinse your bath sponge / face cloth after every wash. The slimy residue that grows on wet cloths and sponges is ridden with bacteria, so be sure to avoid it a all costs!
