the difference between dry and dehydrated skin

Often wondered what the difference between dry and dehydrated skin is? Do you know which of the two you suffer from? We asked skincare expert Sonette Donker, Communications Manager for Dermalogica, to sum this up for us. This is what she had to say:

Dry skin: This is a skin type that you are born with and it is a skin lacking oil. The pores on this skin type will be very small, as it doesn’t produce much oil. This skin type is not normally prone to breakouts and blackheads, but ages very quickly due to lack of oil, serving as a protection mechanism.

Suggested products:
– Dermalogica Super Rich Repair
– Clinique Moisture Surge Intense
– Paula’s Choice Skin Recovery Hydrating Treatment Mask

Dehydrated skin: This is a skin condition and any skin type can become dehydrated, even the most oily of skins. A dehydrated skin lacks moisture, not oil. Often the skin feels tight and may sting or burn when you apply products to the skin. This is due to the skin allowing product to penetrate deeper than intended and therefore reacts with stinging and burning.

Suggested products:
Dermalogica Multi-Activ Toner
– Clarins HydraQuench Intensive Serum Bi-Phase
– Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream

Thanks for the clarification. I know that I suffer from dehydrated skin although my skin is combination. I will try the Kiehls moisturiser as I heard rave reviews about it.

Thank you for the information, I have been definitely incorrectly diagnosing my skin all this time. I’m dehydrated in winter, not dry.

Definitely Dehydrated skin as I sometimes get the stingy feeling when putting on a moisturizer.

Could dehydrated skin be the cause of an underlying medical issue? Or is it a lack of water?
