Tuesday, 15 September 2015

Treatment name: Optiphi Skin Rejuvenation Peel

What it is: A chemical peel designed to rejuvenate the skin and stimulate cellular activity without typical “downtime” such as redness, swelling and actual “peeling.”

Salon: Libi Roos Skincare Clinic, Gardens (Cape Town)

Recommended retail price: From R550

What we say:
The first peel I ever went for left my skin sore, red and extremely sensitive, and a couple of days later, I “peeled” like a lizard. Ever since then I have been extremely cautious of the peels I go for, and I usually bombard my therapist with loads of questions about the procedure before she gets started.

The Optiphi Skin Rejuvenation Peel I had done a couple of weeks ago was the complete opposite of the majority of peels I have had in the past. Firstly (and most importantly), there is no “downtime,” meaning you can go back to the office straight afterwards without any swelling, redness or peeling, and you can even apply make-up straight away.

My therapist started by removing all my make-up, and cleansing my skin thoroughly. Prior to this, we discussed my skin conditions and concerns, as well as what I should be doing to maintain my skin after the session. She applied an anti-inflammatory serum to calm my skin before applying a 25% glycolic acid (the treatment can either use 25%, 30%, or 35%, depending on your skin’s condition and needs). I felt some tingling, more intense in some areas than in others, but the peeling step wasn’t painful or too uncomfortable; it was more like a slight irritation on the skin.

A few minutes later the glycolic acid was neutralised and my skin was layered with a mask and serum to soothe and nourish it, while I relaxed and soaked up the lovely sensation of the mask. Once it was removed, my therapist applied some of the retail products (including an SPF) and we were done – all in under an hour.

Overall I saw a noticeable improvement in my skin’s texture, clarity and radiance in the weeks that followed the peel. I am oily-skinned and get hormonal breakouts, but these were minimal, and my complexion was a lot brighter and healthier-looking. I also noticed a decline in blackheads. These peels are most effective when done in a six week course, and can assist with everything from breakouts, to fine lines and wrinkles and dehydration. This is definitely a treatment I would recommend, and one I will be going back for. I love that Optiphi products are local to South Africa and that they offer such advanced results without hurting the skin. Read up more about some of the different Optiphi products available, here.

I have monthly optiphi peels and use the active range. I have extremely sensitive skin. My skin is smoother, more luminous, and the tiny red veins are less pronounced. I use little or no makeup and the frown lines I’ve always hated are less pronounced. I highly recommend a monthly Optiphi peel!

I have had problem skin for years now. I am 25 years old and still getting acne, what’s worse is that it’s leaving dark marks. Could this treatment be the answer to my dark marks? and will it not cause more break outs? thanks

I am too scared to try this. My skin gets irritated quickly.

I always wanted to have chemical peel. Reluctant that it may leave scarring.

Peeling like a lizard, as awful as it would seem at the time is a good sign! Optiphi products and their peels are awesome!

I’d really like to give this peel a try – I have a slightly uneven skin tone and some scarring from teenage acne that could benefit from it!

There is definitely a difference in the skin peel. All beauty salons operate with different products and find they clash with your skin. But this Optiphi Peel is the one to beat.
