Which products are worth splurging on, and where can I save?

Saturday, 13 June 2015

I don’t have a huge budget for cosmetics, however, I’d like to start looking after my skin properly. Which products are worth spending a little extra on, and for which ones can I go with the cheaper option?

Dr Maureen Allem, founder of Skin & Body Renewal, responds:

“It is very wise to be conscientious about what you spend your budget on. The most important thing to spend your money on are the ‘active products, ‘ ie. the ones that are going to give you the result you’re looking for. So I would say, a good SPF, and a good antioxidant cream or serum for the day, and a good retinoid serum or cream for the night. As for your other products, use an affordable cleanser, don’t even worry about using a toner at all, and if you really want to use a mask or exfoliator, then you just use those once a week or so, and these also do not need to be very expensive options.”

Sometimes the cheaper products actually work better than the expensive ones.

I totally agree with the article. I always used to spend money on expensive masks and toners, but haven’t in the past year or so, and guess what? My skin still looks as good as when I used to use those products.

I think I’m following the above recommendations fairly accurately. I see treating my body in the same way. A simple cleanser that doesn’t strip my skin of moisture, a good oil and hydrating body lotion that doesn’t cost much and making sure that I buy a great SPF lotion no lower than SPF 50.

SPF is a must! I make sure I have a good foundation with a high SPF, which I think is a good start.
