Going to the salon is lovely, but sometimes we just don’t have the a) time; b) cash or c) energy to get in the car and head off to our beloved spa for a much-needed facial. When your only time to take is breather is 10pm at night, you need good quality skincare products to get you through an at-home facial, without compromising on the luxury, relaxation or glow you’d get from the professionals.
So where to start? Take the time to remove all your make-up properly. Dermalogica Precleanse or The Body Shop Camomile Cleansing Oil is great for removing stubborn make-up and impurities. Follow with a trusty cleanser, and gently massage it all over your skin in circular motions. If you have an electronic face brush, this would be a great time to use it. If not, opt for a good exfoliator – you want to get rid of dead and dry skin cells before you apply your nourishing mask.
Now your skin is ready for a hydrating / anti-ageing / moisturising (take your pick) boost. We recommend these five products for a salon-quality facial in the comfort of your own bathroom:
1. Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Boosting 5-Minute Facial, R795
This kit consists of a self-foaming mask and replenishing serum. The multipurpose mask works itself into a foam, which activates enzymatic exfoliators, detoxifies surface impurities and promotes cell turnover. It preps your skin for step two, the serum, which contains a host of goodies like Retinyl Linoleate, tropical fruit extracts and the Ceramide Triple Complex. It seems a bit costly, but it delivers some serious results, and lasts long too. Definitely a winner in our books!
2. Cettua Face Strips, R30 – R45
Whether it’s a pesky pimple, blackheads or oiliness you want to control, Cettua has a face strip for you! These are fast-acting patches that clear up problems without leaving you waiting. Plus, they’re great to keep around for emergencies (such as a first date, night before an event etc). Stock up on a few different ones to make sure you’re always prepared… We particularly love the Nose Strip with Charcoal.
3. REN Flash Rinse 1 Minute Facial, R470
The ultimate time-saver and the busy girl’s best friend. This fast acting treatment works in – literally – one minute. You apply the product to your skin and neck, add a small amount of water to your hands and massage in. Leave for one minute, and voila, a post-facial glow! It contains an innovative water-activated form of vitamin C, and leaves skin firm, toned and smooth. Plus it’s paraben-free!
4. Skin Republic CoQ10 + Caviar Face Mask Sheet, R39.95
If you’ve got twenty minutes or so to relax, this is the mask for you. Filled with CoQ10, vitamin E, witch hazel and a host of vitamins, proteins and minerals found in caviar, it’s an anti-ageing boost with a difference. The thin fabric sheet sits comfortably on the skin and has a cooling sensation, plus, there’s so much excess fluid in the packet that you can give your neck and décolletage a treat too.
5. QMS Medicosmetics Activator Mask, R795
This fleece mask is filled with nourishing marine collagens and hyaluronic acid to refresh, moisturise and smooth the skin. The ten minute application is enough to revive tired skin and is great for travellers suffering from jet lag. When you apply the Item Tab in the Activator Mask, the fleece swells, allowing it to fit perfectly onto the contours of the face. This product is great if you’re after instant results.
