Your skin by the decade: 50 – 60+

Skin care in your 50s and 60sYour fifties and beyond is the time to spend some quality time on (and with) yourself. With your children grown up and your career no longer the most important thing in your life, you can begin to take some time to relax and take care of yourself properly. At this age your cell turnover slows down dramatically, and all the damage your skin suffered through the years will become more noticeable. You will need to spend some extra time (and add a few products to your routine) to ensure your skin remains healthy.

What you may notice:

Defined wrinkles
Dehydration
• Age spots (hyperpigmentation) and sun damage
• Loss of elasticity
• Visible pores
Increased sensitivity

What you need:

You’ll need to make sure you cleanse your skin gently twice a day (to remove all traces of make-up and impurities), but as dehydration becomes more prevalent at this age, choose your cleanser wisely. Stick to soap-free cleansers and creamy or foaming formulations. Skin also becomes more sensitive when we get older, so a soap-free formula is best to prevent irritation.

If you haven’t invested in a good serum yet, now is the time. Try one that contains antioxidants like vitamin C or peptides, and be sure to apply a rich night cream in the evening. Your day cream should also be richer than the one you use din your thirties and forties, and must be followed by an SPF of at least 20.

To minimise the formation of lines around your eye and lip area, apply an eye serum / eye cream or lip cream daily. The active ingredients therein will assist in controlling wrinkle-formation whilst keeping your skin moisturised.

We suggest:

Lancôme Absolue Sublime Regenerating Oleo-Serum, R1795

Anesi Beauté Crème Aqua Vital, R467

Perricone MD Acyl-Glutathione Eye Lid Serum,
R1825

Dermalogica Renewal Lip Complex, R390

Eucerin Anti-Age Volume-Filler Day Cream, R289.99

Awesome products. Great article for ladies at that age. I’ll let my mum know :)

My mom is 50+ and doesn’t look a day older than 35! I wish her good genes were passed onto me!

The Dermalogica lippie is so pricy! But then again, so is the average high-end branded lipstick.

I am not in this category yet, however I have seen how my skin has become more sensitive. Now I know it is because of ageing.
