You can rock any style of sunnies (aviator, oversized, wayfarer, cat-eye) if you pick a pair with the right details for your face shape.
What’s the most important thing to consider when buying spectacles? As always we asked an expert. Chiara Rosini from the Italian Eyewear Group Luxottica says apart from face shape, the first criteria, it’s important to consider how often the glasses will be worn and for what.
“These days, many people have a wardrobe of glasses that are used with different outfits. For some it’s all about the activity they’re doing matching their choices,” says Chiara.
“Different brands do suit different faces but all our brands are made to the best standards of comfort, so it’s only a matter of personal preference,” she adds.
Here’s her last bit of advice: “Choose the frame colour like you’d choose a shade of nail polish. A boldly coloured frame can add an eccentric touch to a quiet navy ensemble, just as a more traditional pair can tone down an exaggerated outfit.”
If the shape fits …
Keyhole sunnies: This retro-influenced shape is ideal for the woman who likes an understated style with a twist. The keyhole is often paired with classic shapes, both round, and square, in tortoiseshell or matte materials. It works best on oval-shaped faces.
Try: Vogue Eyewear Sunglasses, R1 290 and Vogue Eyewear Polarized Sunglasses, R1 390.
New Aviator sunnies: Pilot shapes are a good option for long faces, as the teardrop silhouette accentuates cheek and jaw bones. Usually linked to the first Ray-Ban model, the Aviator was born in 1937 and the shape has become a timeless design, reworked often to keep it contemporary and relevant.
Try: Giorgio Armani Sunglasses, R3 390 and Burberry Sunglasses, R2 890.
Round sunnies: This was the major trend in 2015 and continues to top the list for our consumers. A rounded frame softens lines, making it suitable for square faces. It has made a strong comeback in recent years and sits nicely with the current soft tailoring trend seen on the catwalks, and with the new wave of rock icons. The variations offer options, whether you want an understated take on the trend or a statement that is sure to make an impact.
Try: Giorgio Armani Sunglasses, R2 490 and Dolce & Gabbana Sunglasses, R3 090.
Square sunnies: Angular shapes are best for round faces. Classic square shapes can be styled for every occasion while the trendy flat top construction adds a sporty look off the field.
Try: Prada Sunglasses, R3 390 and Dolce & Gabbana Sunglasses, R3 490.
Bridge sunnies: For a sophisticated statement. The devil is in the details –the metallic bridge and quality acetate create a unique balance that won’t go unnoticed. Persol Calligrapher, the new special edition of the brand, is celebrating this shape with four models featuring acetate frames with a metal bridge. It’s a perfect example of vintage style and modern taste. Not only has the mix of materials been updated, the bridge is elevated in construction and style. It also enhances the classic sensibility of iconic shapes.
Try: Giorgio Armani Sunglasses, R3 690 and Ray-Ban Sunglasses, R2 390.
