Six ways to exfoliate your skin this winter

It’s time to get silky! While many associate winter with dry skin, a simple exfoliating regimen could help soften your skin, unclog your pores and help you live your best skin life – no matter what season it is.

Our skin cells are constantly renewed (approximately every 27 days), leaving behind dry, dull and flaky skin. It’s important to get rid of that old skin – which often also causes blocked pores and oil buildup – and start anew. Here’s six ways to exfoliate and some products to include in your beauty routine.

Body scrub

A good old body scrub is a classic method of exfoliating. These granular exfoliants help you scrub away dead skin with ease, but they can damage your skin due to the abrasive, granular texture. Look for scrubs containing coffee and sugar, and products with a moisturising boost.

The Avène Gentle Purifying Scrub is formulated with thermal spring water and exfoliating jojoba micro-beads that gently buff away dead cells. It’s great for sensitive skin.

Fruit enzyme exfoliatore

Get soft skin and enjoy a delicious fragrance when exfoliating with products that include natural fruit extracts. Perfect for beauties with sensitive skin, the natural ingredients remove dead skin without causing harm to the epidermis (outer layer of the skin). The fruity extracts digest only the dead cells on the surface of the skin, leaving you with a radiant glow. Products that include pineapple are especially beneficial as it contains bromelain, a natural enzyme that reduces inflammation. Honey is pretty sweet too, and works to further soften and nourish your skin.

Dry brushing

Great for stimulation, circulation (and reducing cellulite) and even better for removing dead skin cells, these dry alternatives help you get softer skin without using water. Whether you use a brush, cloth or exfoliating pad, these are quick-fix methods of exfoliating. Simply brush upwards using long strokes. Be careful not to damage your skin. Hint: stop when it turns slightly pink.

We love the Ayaté cloths. These hand-woven cloths are inspired by ancient Mexican beauty secrets and work to exfoliate your skin and stimulate your circulation. Use it wet or dry, with or without your favourite body wash and let it work its magic.

Peels

Peels do not have to be as scary as they sound. But if you want a clean slate, a peel could be your best bet. At-home peels are super convenient ways of exfoliating your face and feet too. Those with sensitive skin should use with caution. Opt for products with natural ingredients. Chemical peels are available for those stubborn skin cells.

Enzymatic exfoliators

A good option for those who are too scared of using peels, enzyme exfoliation helps prevent breakouts, clears clogged pores and removes dull skin. Enzymatic exfoliators are characterised as a type of chemical exfoliation that works more gently than AHA (Alpha hydroxy acids) chemical exfoliants, but still dramatically aids in the removal of that nasty, dry skin that you just can’t get rid of.

Clay

The new wave in exfoliating, clay masks are considered a more gentle way of exfoliating, but it’s important to be aware of your skin type and the ingredients in the products you want to use. The specially formulated clays work to exfoliate dull, uneven skin and get rid of impurities.

Top tips!

* Depending on your skin type and climate, you should try to exfoliate 1-3 times a week.

* Exfoliate at night, as the sun-rays and debris in the air during the day could be harmful to your freshly buffed skin. Also, exfoliate less in summer.

* Keep your skin type in mind when exfoliating, for soft skin without the damage. Hello, radiant glow!
