Question: Baby’s Skin

Hi there Dr Maureen, I was just wondering what to do for my 1year old daughter's skin. She is fair and I know her skin is sensitive because anything with a fragrance gives her redness and makes her skin dotty. I do use fragrance free Johnson's Lotion but her skin remains dry and dotty. she also has this patch around both her wrists that are dry and discoloured. The GP gave me Persivate cream and told me to use aqueous cream - the Persivate kind of makes it look less dry, and the aqueous makes it break out into dots. I want to know if the patches will ever go away and what can really work to keep her skin moisturised and smooth. I do add Baby Oil to her bath water as well as rub her skin with a little while bathing her. Thank you for your guidance!

Answer

Thank-you very much for your question. Firstly i would suggest you stop putting baby oil in her bath water. If you keep on oiling a skin, you are going to make that skin more and more dry over time as the skin stops producing its own natural oil as a result. I would suggest you use epimax cream rather than aqeous cream as this is better suited to use on small children and infants. On a daily basis, at this stage i would suggest that you use a baby sunblock on her every day rather than perfumed lotions and creams. So baby sunblock every day, epimax every night. You will probably find that the patches you mentioned will disappear over time, but if it is more serious and she has some eczema. we will have to give her something for those specific areas.
