Question: Eczema

I have never had eczema before in my life. It was triggered by a chemical in a face care product that I had tried for the first time. I've since stopped using that product and my skin is recovering well thanks to proper nutrition and a topical treatment for eczema. I would like to know if eczema has the tendency to move from one area to the next even if the eczema was caused by a chemical from a product. The skin on my face is so much better and I don't flake, peel or itch anymore. But then the area just under my chin (where the neck meets the face - if that makes sense) started to itch flake and peel. Then that area got better and now the area at the back of my neck has the same itch, flake and peel symptoms. Will this move down to my back? The flare ups happen about twice...then the area begins to heal and eventually smoothes out and goes back to 'normal'.

Answer

Thank you very much for your question. By reading your story, it sounds like you do in fact have eczema, which is unfortunately caused due to genetics, or auto-immune disorder, and highly unlikely to be caused or triggered by a facial product. I assume this product was only used on your face, so it wouldn’t be able to affect the skin on your back. Also if an irritation is caused by a facial product it would most likely manifest as contact dermatitis, which would stop once the product is stopped. Eczema my move from one area to the next. It may be triggered by stress, diet and other internal factors. I have had very good results using neostrata problem dry skin product to sooothe the discomfort and flakinesscaused by the eczema, although it will not cure your eczema.
