Hi Judy,
The smoky eye is all about blending, blending and blending. BeautySA have a great how-to video here.
But here’s how to create a day-time smoky eye:
Apply a cream colour foundation on the eyelid up till the crease.
On the inside corner of the eye and the outside corner, use a dark brown shade, and then join the two corners and blend in the crease.
Above the crease (under the eyebrow) use a white colour shadow.
Now use the same brown, and with a thin brush apply it along the lashline (the way you would with liquid liner) and under the bottom lash line.
Use a brush or dry earbud to smudge.
Finish off with 2 coats of mascara.
This look is gorgeous when completed with bronzer to highlight cheekbones and apple of the cheeks, and a nude lip colour.
