Answer

There are two main factors that contribute to large pores: genetics and age. People who have skin that is naturally thick and oily tend to have larger pores. As people get older, too, sun damage and decreased skin elasticity can cause pores to dilate. The skin thickens, causing tiny cells to collect around the edge of the pores and make them look larger. Blackheads are also a big contributor to large pores. When the pore becomes clogged by dirt and bacteria, oil within the pore begins to accumulate, causing the pore’s diameter to expand.

How can one improve enlarged pores? The good news is that the appearance of large pores can be greatly reduced in a number of ways. For example,

1. Cleansing the pores of debris, excess oil, and bacteria will significantly reduce their prominence. This can be achieved by using a low-strength topical medication or face wash with Alpha HA s, Beta HAs or Poly HAs

2. Exfoliation is also a key to minimizing the appearance of large pores. This can be accomplished using at-home facial scrubs or in office Microdermabrasion and Alpha Hydroxy and Beta Hydroxy Peels

3. Any treatment or products that increase the collagen content of the dermis will improve the size of the pores.

Home Therapies:
There are traditional therapies such as home prescriptives containing Alpha and Beta Hydroxy acids as well as the NeoStrata brand which is only available at Doctors offices. Neostrata Ultra Daytime Smoothing Cream with SPF 15 and Ultra Smoothing cream are formulated with anti-aging, rejuvenating benefits for daytime moisturizing and broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sun protection against daily casual sun exposure. Over time these products will reduce the appearance and size of the pores.

In Office Therapies:
Any treatment or products that increase the collagen content of the dermis will improve the size of the pores. Laser combinations of collagen inducing treatments such as Titan®, Laser Genesis ™ or Pearl laser combined with Beta Salicylic Acid Peels and transdermal mesotherapy assist in improving collagen content in the dermis and thereby reduce the size of the pores.

Question

Hey there I am an aspiring beauty blogger and I would like to know about the effects of climate and climate change on skin. I have been watching a lot of beauty and make-up reviews on YouTube and other fashion and beauty blogs and this has been a recurring topic among influencers. Does this mean that seasonal changes require me to change the products that I use on my skin with every season or can I use the same products throughout the year?

Thank you do much for replying to my question, I really appreciate it.

Question from Dorothy Basson

Question

Hi Dr Allem
I am a lupus patient and have rosacea skin. I have developed a skin allergy/ rash because I used Eucerin anti redness for extra moisture during winter. I normally use Bioderma AR and Skinceuticals Phytocorrective. It always worked fine, however due to dryness I tried Eucerin which caused such an allergic reaction that I can not get it to calm down. The dermatologist and doctor prescribed Tetralysal, Prednisone, Travocort, which did not do much then Advantan Ointment, Advantan milk, Epimax mixed with a cortisone…. there is pretty much not much I have not tried. I have a bright red cheeks and neck. My problem is that even the Bioderma and Skinceuticals now make me flare up. I also have Lamelle Serra products. I’m desperate for a product and foundation that I can try? Please can you recommend something? Anything from Skinceuticals kills me – I have tried them all.
Thanks and kind regards
Dorothy
