Question: Home Chemical Peels

Is it ok to do a chemical peel at home and if so, is it best to use a 50 or 70 % glycolic acid or a salicylic acid peel? I have been looking at peels from www.skinpeelshop.com, are these ok?

Answer

I am not a fan of people doing peels at home. Firstly, people push the limits without really knowing what they are doing and then there are disasterous results… which only damages the person and damages our industry because of the negativity this creates. Also, there are peels, and there are peels. A 70% glycolic is not just simply the same as any other 70% glycolic. Things like pH and the amount of free acid comes into play and the end consumer is not generally clued up on these things and how they affect the patient’s skin. So I am dead against performing peels at home. There is a big difference in doing an exfoliating mask, or using exfoliating enzymes or using lotions or serums that contain acids. That is great, BUT perfomring peels – I’m afraid this is playing with fire.
