It can be a tricky task, but a steady hand is always the saver. Try applying it slowly, starting in the inner corner of the eye, drawing a line across that elevates as you reach the end. Draw the line away from your eyelashes and then fill them in once you have the outer line right. A nice way to get it to last is to apply a nude eye shadow to your lids to help it to set faster and stay on for longer. With this practise makes perfect so keep going at it till you get it right.
