Question: Can I drink peppermint oil for bad breath?

Hi Dr Graham, I just wanted to know is it safe to ingest peppermint essential oil? I read somewhere it can help with bad breath.

Answer

Hi reader, that is a very interesting question.

Let’s start by taking a look at the issue of bad breath. Bad breath (halitosis) is due to a number of causes, either bacterial infection of the gums, teeth, tonsils or sinuses; smoking; metabolic disorders and digestive disorders. Have your oral hygienist and physician check these for you which could most likely result in a cure. Peppermint oil as an oral supplement should be taken in a capsule form and not chewed. It may cause nausea and heartburn and some people are allergic to peppermint. It is not considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is usually prescribed for indigestion and irritable bowel syndrome, but otherwise has no further direct action on the breath. A peppermint mouthwash would be more effective for bad breath, but must never be swallowed.

Best regards
