Question: Question from Lizelle Lloyd

Hi Dr Maureen, I am a 31 yr old mother with very limited time for skincare routine. I have recently been diagnosed with scalp atopic dermattis and have been put on a course of antibiotics for a full month. Ive only had severe cases after all three of my pregnancies with my last one been 8 months ago. How can I prevent this from returning and what products would you recommend for my scalp-keep in mind I have very curly ethic hair making it very difficult to use some products as I need extra moisture and conditioner for my hair. I have also recently noticed a mild case of eczema on my breast-making breastfeeding quite challenging. Please help :)

Answer

Hello.

Skin conditions such as dermatitis is normally caused by a underlying systemic problem such as inflammation in the gut. This is quite common, inflammation in the body can manifest on the skin in many forms such as dermatitis, eczema, acne, rosacea etc. Applying something directly to your scalp, such as a steroid, will help with the superficial inflammation or reaction but it will not prevent it long term.

I would suggest that you take probiotics daily to ensure a healthy gut, this will reduce internal inflammation.
