Tips to Managing your Weight with a Hypothyroid
First, consult your doctor. It’s important that accurate diagnosis and suitable medication recommendations are made.
Research suggests slightly restricting your normal carb intake will help with hypothyroidism. Aim for a ratio of carbs/protein/fat to 50-30-20. Make sure these are complex carbs where possible.
Going hand in hand with this – lay off sugared and processed foods. These are often simple carbohydrates like cakes, sweets, biscuits, chips etc, which all stimulate high insulin production. Also avoid eating carbs alone for either meals or snacks. Make sure you include a protein source at the same time, as protein digests slower in the body.
Include more fibre in your diet. If you are suffering with a hypothyroid, you may suffer with slower digestionand constipation. Aim for between 30-45 grams a day. Alongside this, you need to take in plenty of water.
