What can I do to bring my breakouts under control?

Question

Hi Dr Maureen,

I hope this message finds you well.
I am 25 years old and still getting acne breakouts which leave dark marks. I have tried almost every product for breakouts, acne, blackheads, dark marks. I’ve been to skin care clinics, for facials, most of the time my skin gets slightly better and then in no time it starts breaking out. this has affected my socially as my facial appearance has really deteriorated and I’m losing my self esteem. I am now considering to go to a dermatologist. Please advice.
Thank you

Answer

Thank you very much for your question. There are many people out there who are sitting in exactly the same boat as you. The answer to your question is both simple and complex at the same time. Simple, in that the error has been that everyone you have been to for help is helping you treat a symptom… hence the short lived results. Acne, is not as simple as just treating the skin and the breakouts themselves. In the majority of acne cases, the problem does not simply lie in the skin. In about 70% of cases, the problem is very much internal and just manifesting as acne on the skin. If you pin point the trigger, which can be done with some simple testing and investigation, and you treat that trigger (the cause), you will be able to see longer lasting, more permanent results as the acne will then start clearing as it’s trigger is being brought under control. Question from Penelope PENNY

Question

Hey there I am an aspiring beauty blogger and I would like to know about the effects of climate and climate change on skin. I have been watching a lot of beauty and make-up reviews on YouTube and other fashion and beauty blogs and this has been a recurring topic among influencers. Does this mean that seasonal changes require me to change the products that I use on my skin with every season or can I use the same products throughout the year?

Thank you do much for replying to my question, I really appreciate it.

Question from Dorothy Basson

Question

Hi Dr Allem
I am a lupus patient and have rosacea skin. I have developed a skin allergy/ rash because I used Eucerin anti redness for extra moisture during winter. I normally use Bioderma AR and Skinceuticals Phytocorrective. It always worked fine, however due to dryness I tried Eucerin which caused such an allergic reaction that I can not get it to calm down. The dermatologist and doctor prescribed Tetralysal, Prednisone, Travocort, which did not do much then Advantan Ointment, Advantan milk, Epimax mixed with a cortisone…. there is pretty much not much I have not tried. I have a bright red cheeks and neck. My problem is that even the Bioderma and Skinceuticals now make me flare up. I also have Lamelle Serra products. I’m desperate for a product and foundation that I can try? Please can you recommend something? Anything from Skinceuticals kills me – I have tried them all.
Thanks and kind regards
Dorothy
