Question: What is your opinion on the do-it-yourself laser hair removal devices?

Hi Dr Maureen. What is your opinion on the do-it-yourself laser hair removal devices being sold now, such as the no-no and the Silk'n machines? Are they worth buying? Going for laser treatments is unfortunately too expensive but, with the really terrible ingrown hairs I get, it seems like my best option. I'd love to know what you think. Thanks very much!

Answer

I must be honest and say that this is a very difficult question to answer, as we are not “comparing apples with apples” here. There is a vast difference between Medical Grade lasers that are used for Hair removal, versus IPL machines that are commonly used in beauty salons, versus retail machines that are sold to customers. Just from a safety point of view, the machines that are sold as “at home machines”, cannot possibly be as powerful as the professional units otherwise it would be unsafe for customers. It is also very difficult to guarantee results with these machines.

I also just feel that if you have qualified laser operator doing your treatments, not only do you get good results, but you have someone to go to with any concerns or issues and you have professional advice on call.
