All about the German cut

Whether you’re going natural and ready to get the big chop, or looking for a simple but chic hairstyle, look no further than the German cut. The iconic Grace Jones first sported this now timeless cut during the 80’s while here in South Africa, gospel singer Rebecca Malope is as well known for her hairstyle as she is for her music.

So what exactly is it? This military inspired style usually sees hair being cut very short with a close shave or no hair at all on the sides of the head. For the more adventurous, German cuts can be made even bolder by adding some hair dye or creative cutting. The list of celebrities that have recently made this look trendy includes Lupita Nyong’o, Solange Knowles, Chrisette Michelle and our very own Nandi Mngoma and Pearl Modadie.

This style has the added benefit of being very easy to maintain; aside from your regular moisturising and washing, all that’s needed on a daily basis is a bit of brushing and you’re good to go!

Are you brave enough to try this look?

  1. I love it a lot – I am juts not sure if it will work for me though I am really desiring to cut my hair. I been having long hair for too long now and need a change.

  2. Definitely not brave enough for this look. I prefer my long hair but it’s so flattering and beautiful for people that have strong features to play up.
