How to rock a moustache this Movember 1

Movember is here, which means it’s time to raise awareness around the topic of men’s health. Whether you’re growing a moustache to promote a cause, or simply standing in solidarity with other guys, there’s no better time to master the art of maintaining a well-groomed moustache or beard. These simple tips will have you living out your facial hair dreams with ease.

Choose your shape
If you’re new to sporting facial hair, you may want to consult a barber to get started. They’ll help you map out the shape you want and give you some tips on how to maintain it as the hair grows longer. As far as style is concerned, anything goes! Make sure you choose a shape you like and that suits your lifestyle (there is no point growing a shape that’s difficult to maintain if you don’t have the time to maintain it).

Keep it clean
Beards and moustaches, like your skin and hair, require regular washing to look their best and remain hygienic. Use a gentle cleanser twice a day to ensure your facial hair is clean and free from dirt and impurities. We recommend Lush Kalamazoo Beard and Facial Wash (R165.00 on za.lush.com)

Moisturise
Facial hair tends to be rough and unruly, which is why you need to moisturise your moustache / beard with a beard oil or moisturiser regularly. In addition to coarse hair, you may also experience dryness and discomfort on the skin below the hair. A good quality hair oil like Moroccanoil Treatment (from R230.00 on retailbox.co.za) doubles up as a beard oil and ensures the hair remains soft and manageable.

Trim
A regular trim is the key to a well-groomed moustache. You may want to invest in an electrical trimmer to keep the shape in check, or if you prefer, book a regular slot with your barber and have it maintained professionally.

Razor sharp
Ever notice how an old razor can wreak havoc on your skin? We recommend replacing the blades regularly to ensure a close shave and to avoid nicks and cuts. Don’t store your razor in the shower (the steam and water can make the blades rust) and take your time when shaving the area around your moustache – rushing can lead to nicks and irritated skin. Invest in a good quality shaving cream. We recommend Chanel’s Bleu de Chanel Shaving Cream (R960.00 at Chanel counters) for a bit of luxury in your grooming routine.

Bumps and discomfort
Most men experience redness, sensitivity, razor burn or ingrown hair at some point in their lives. Luckily there is a host of products available to combat these irritations. Nivea Men Daily Skin & Stubble Lotion (R109.00 at pharmacies and leading retailers) has anti-itch and soothing properties and can be used as after-shave, as a moisturiser and as a stubble softener. It’s enriched with chamomile and almond oil and is free from alcohol, making it ultra gentle on the skin. If your skin is prone to bumps after shaving, we recommend a few spritzes of FINO Man Bump Control (R70.00 at pharmacies and leading retailers). It goes to work immediately to prevent razor bumps and can be applied regularly to maintain the skin’s comfort. Dermaceutic’s Panthenol Ceutic (R535.00 on dermastore.co.za) is a highly nourishing moisturiser designed to use on skin post-procedures, but it can also be applied post-shaving to calm and hydrate the skin. Suitable for sensitive and very dry skins, it contains a restoring complex that has an immediate calming effect on irritated skin, along with shea butter and beeswax to hydrate and nourish the skin.

Style it
A little bit of styling product goes a long way to ensure your moustache keeps its shape and looks its best. We recommend applying a little bit of Biosense Finish Gel Wax (R375.00 on retailbox.co.za) to your moustache in the morning. It has the look of a gel and the finish of a wax, and it doesn’t hurt that is smells nice and fresh too.
