Cape Town based hair stylist, Mario Atzemoglou of Mario’s Company for Hair, has worked with glamorous celebs and local personalities like Vanessa Haywood, Chelsea Davy and Lady Kitty Spencer. We showed him four of the hottest hair looks this season and got him to dish on how to recreate them at home.
‘To achieve this messy braid you need to apply a fair amount of mousse to the hair before drying’, says Mario. ‘The hair needs to be dried roughly without styling to create a messed up, almost frizzy look. Create a part on one side of the head and make a loose French plait all the way down towards the back of your head’. Stop half way and close the plait with a hair band, then use your brush to tease your pony a bit to give it extra volume. When you’re done, he suggests you use a few spritzes of hair spray to keep the braid in check.
The low pony
‘After drying, use anti-frizz products together with your flat iron’, says Mario. ‘Comb your hair back tightly and use an elastic band to hold hair in a conventional low pony. Next, take a small amount of hair from the pony to wrap around the elastic band to create a smoother look’. To finish up, Mario suggests you make use of a shine spray to create an extra sleek-looking finish.
Beach babe waves
To begin, Mario advises that you apply a volumising mousse to your hair before drying it. ‘Next, use your flat iron or curling tong to create big soft curls. Gently brush through the big curls with a flat brush to relax them a bit and give your hair that causual, beachy look’.
The super-shiny ultra-severe side part
‘Don’t be shy to apply a generous amount of silicone to hair before drying’, says Mario. ‘Once your hair’s dry, use a flat iron to enhance the sleek look even further. Then, create a dead straight part on either the left or right and finish up with a bit of shine spray’.
