How to care for wigs and weaves

If you’re trying to grow out natural hair, weaves and wigs are great as protective styles when worn correctly. And they’re also ideal if you just want to try different looks without changing your own hair. Just don’t let your hairline disappear like Naomi Campbell’s has.

Tips
• Invest in a premium weave or wig with a full head of virgin hair. They cost more because the cuticles are intact and aren’t covered with silicones. They’ll last longer and you can style them more easily than synthetic ones.

• Choose your length and look according to your lifestyle. A curly-textured one requires less work and you can simply wake up and go. If you exercise regularly and have a busy schedule, a long, straight one can be tedious to style and maintain.

• As you would with your own hair, cut your weave or wig to suit the shape of your face.

• Oil your scalp and hairline regularly (avoiding the weave) and wear a silk scarf for protection when you sleep. This prevents tension and hair loss along the hairline.

• Don’t neglect your natural hair underneath and condition your hair before attaching a weave to it.

• Wash hair every 10 days to two weeks. Choose a shampoo for dry hair to give your natural and weave hair the moisture they both need. Use a deep conditioner on both too.

• Skip the oil sheen and hairspray as this weights the weave hair down.

• Avoid glue extensions. Chemicals in the glue can cause allergic reactions that result in scalp and hair irritation. Removing the glued tracks afterwards can break your hair. Weaves sewn into cornrows look just as natural as glued-in weaves.

  1. Gosh how I love oil sheen, but honestly I’ve learned the hard way with my hairline that I need to take care of my hair even when wearing a weave. Thanks for the advise
