Feeling the back-to-work slump? Weekends and public holidays often leave us feeling more tired than ever and getting into the normal nine to five routine can be challenging. If you find yourself struggling to focus and keep your eyes open at your desk (and napping pods were unfortunately not yet introduced in your workplace), ditch that burger during lunch and try eating your way to a revived self. These energy-boosting – and energy sustaining – foods, could help give lethargy the boot.
Providing you with loads of potassium, bananas will keep you energised throughout the day and right on through your gym session. They are also rich in B vitamins, giving you that instant hit of energy you need.
Oats are another yummy source of B vitamins, and are low GI, providing your body with a steady stream of energy. Because they are full of fibre, they also keep your digestion on track and maintain normal, and steady, sugar levels. Important though, is to stick to the natural, original oats and avoid those instant options!
3. Lentils, beans and chickpeas
With these three fibre-rich foods, you can get the best of both worlds – carbohydrates and protein. They also contain stacks of B vitamins, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, calcium and copper. With a slow release of glucose, these energy boosters are a must on any grocery list!
Already known to be one of the super foods, this fish is a powerful mix of protein, vitamins, minerals and omega-3 fatty acids. Protecting your heart, giving your energy and brainpower a boost, salmon will keep you going all day, every day.
Nuts (almonds, cashews and the rest) are a great pick-me-up, helping to improve focus and mental clarity. They are full of healthy fats, protein, magnesium and carbohydrates, so combine them with some grains and dried fruit to make a delectable, energy-filled trail mix, or grab a handful as a snack.
An apple a day keeps the doctor away, right? It’s true! Not only are apples a great source of fibre and vitamin C, but they also contain boron – a mineral that, among other things, improves brain function and cognitive performance.
It is one of the world’s healthiest vegetables, and is considered to be an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and iron. Spinach will restore energy levels and reduce stress to leave you feeling fresh and revitalised!
8. Dark chocolate
Dark chocolate is an excellent source of antioxidants. We all rejoiced about the findings that proved chocolate was good for us. It turns out, it’s also ideal for reviving and maintaining energy levels as it contains caffeine (makes sense) and compounds such as phenylethylamine (a chemical related to amphetamines and raises blood pressure and blood glucose levels) and tyramine (an amino acid that helps regulate blood pressure). Don’t get too excited though – dark chocolate still contains sugar, fat and calories along with the caffeine, so be sure to consume it in moderation!
9. Sweet potato
Carbs, glorious carbs! Loaded with vitamin A, C and B6, these babies will give you a good boost. Unlike regular spuds, they won’t leave you feeling tired and ready for a nap after lunch and they have fewer calories. Score! Enjoy them baked or have some sweet potato crisps for an enjoyable snack.
