Local songstress Chiano Sky wowed me a couple of months ago at the Symphonic Rocks concert in Jo’burg. Die-hard rock chick that I am, I was ready to roll my eyes at ‘yet another pop princess‘, but I was quickly stunned to silence at this 19-year-old’s presence and sexy confidence – and her voice, of course. We take a look at how to achieve her playful, sexy look.
This style is ideal for when you’ve had your hair down all day and want to glam it up for an evening out. With your head upside down, gather the hair at the very top of your head. The secret is that it shouldn’t be high at the back like a ballerina bun, but stacked all the way on top. Form a bun, making extra twists in the hair as you go along. Depending on the length and thickness of your hair, use either a rubber band or hairpins to secure. If necessary, pick out small pieces of hair, and secure others with bobby pins to create an elegantly messy look. If you have a fringe, straighten it and use a shine serum or spray.
With your hair pulled away from your face, you’ll want to conceal imperfections and create a canvas that’s as close to flawless as you can get. Start with a primer like GOSH Foundation Primer Classic, R190. Apply a matte foundation all over your face, and build in areas where you need extra cover – try Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse, R160. Apply a rosy blush to the apples of your cheeks, like Stila Convertible Colour Blush in Poppy, R240 but make sure you have a light hand though. Set with translucent powder if necessary.
For a glam vintage-inspired winged eye, start by applying a gold shimmer shade in the inner corners. If you’re not sure how to do winged eyeliner or shadow, the safest way is to use a nude pencil to draw a curved line from the outer corner of your eye towards the outer edge of your eyebrow (as an extension of your lower lash line) and to use that as your guide.
Use charcoal, dark olive or chocolate brown as the base colour, a metallic colour as the mid colour and a golden hue for the accent at the top. Be sure to blend the lines well to create a smooth look. In this picture that darkest shadow was also used under the eye to round off the wing. Finish off with mascara.
If this look is too dramatic for you, scrap the winged eye shadow and just apply your eyeliner with a wing for an added touch of glam.
Berry lips are currently a huge trend on the international fashion scene, why not try a sexy, cherry red that says Hello Santa? I’d suggest Elizabeth Arden Ceramide lipstick in Rouge or Brick, R170.
