How your skin ages

It’s a fact of life. Everyone’s skin is going to age thanks to the hands of Father Time. This is referred to as chronological aging. Also, some skin types might age faster than others and a lot of that’s related to your genes and hormone levels. These are the internal factors that but there are external ones too, things like an unhealthy diet and lifestyle. The good news, however, is that the external factors are things you have some control over. This is why not smoking, limiting alcohol consumption and avoiding unprotected sun and pollution exposure will go a long way towards a more youthful-looking skin.

Even your weight can have an effect on your complexion. As your body weight increases your blood sugar levels rise and the resultant biochemical reactions can damage the structural framework of your skin. Same goes for the reactions caused by stress.

How your skin ages

What does accelerated ageing look like?
Most of us know common signs are things like wrinkles and sun damage but there’s a lot going on in the deeper layers of your skin. This includes a loss of fibrous tissue (the structure that gives your skin it’s bounce), a slower rate of cellular renewal and a reduced vascular and glandular network. You can also disrupt your skin’s barrier function that allows moisture to escape and irritants to get in with the results being dryness and irritation. Something else you don’t want to have to look forward to is that your hypodermis, the mostly fatty tissue that makes up a deeper layer of skin, begins to flatten, affecting the plumpness of your face, hands and even your feet!

They’re not lying when they say ageing isn’t for sissies so it’s definitely not something we want to accelerate but the good new is that, with a healthy lifestyle and a little investment in the latest scientific innovations and practices, it’s possible to dramatically slow down and potentially even reverse the signs of accelerated skin ageing.

Slowing down the clock
Two ways to slow down the rate of ageing include hormone therapy and supplements. You can read more about that over here.

Topically, you can look out for skincare containing proven anti-ageing ingredients like retinol, alpha hydroxy acids and cutting-edge peptides. Peptides are the new kid on the block and researchers have found that applying them to your skin encourages it to form new collagen. Just one especially exciting peptide is called palmitoyl tetrapeptide-3 (sometimes referred to as palmitoyl tetrapeptide-4). Aside from revving up collagen and elastin production, it also enhances the volumising action of hyaluronic acid, something that’s found naturally in your skin and helps to hydrate and plump it up from the inside out.

You’ll find this particular peptide along with other ones in products like Matriskin Collagen MP Serum, just one of many potent anti-ageing treatments in Skin Renewal’s Online Skin Shop.

There are also an array of in-office non-surgical solutions to help you turn back the hands of time and these range from chemical peels and injectables like fillers and Botulinum toxin to lasers and radio frequency treatments.

To learn more visit Skin Renewal online or make an appointment with one of our doctors who can help suggest a line of treatment to help restore a more youthful-looking appearance or simply prevent you from ageing prematurely.

    1. Hey! Thank you so much for your comment. It depends, I think. I’ve been told you can start as early as 21-25, but there are some collagen products that you should only use from your mid-30s because before then it might cause irritation (your skin is making its own collagen before then). This is a cute article that might be helpful, too: Hope that helps! – Aléz
