5 Affordable Cruelty-free Cosmetics Brands

Wednesday, 4 May 2016

These cosmetics are affordable, available in South Africa, and they don’t test their products on animals.

The beauty industry, an industry which is meant to inspire positive and happy lifestyles, has gained a reputation for animal abuse over the years, testing potentially harmful products on all types of animals. Choosing conscientious beauty products means you’re standing up against animal testing.

Here is a list of five great ethical beauty brands found in South Africa

1. Essence

Essence aims to bring unique, trendy looks at affordable prices while focusing on versatility and variety. This brand brings you a more edgy way to keep your look up-to-date while still keeping animals safe. Their products range from bold eye liners and mascaras to vibrant lip and nail pigments.

2. Sh’zen

The direct translation of this brand name, in Japanese, means ‘natural’. This encapsulates their simple approach to beauty that they have created through all types of products to care for the body, face and hair. They maintain a strong emphasis on aromatherapy, their ingredients made up of therapeutic plant extracts and essential oils. Furthermore, this company has had the willing support of many doctors and physical specialists that show how pure and effective this range of products are.

3. Lush

This brand has achieved world-wide popularity, managing to create unique and effective products with a commitment to completely fresh, natural and organic ingredients like berries and fruits. They go above and beyond to ensure that the freshest ingredients are incorporated with function, happy creators, effective costs and even expiry dates. Their products cater for all beauty needs from bathing lotions to eye shadows.

4. Avon

This brand strongly stands for pride, beauty, empowerment and strength, as a well-rounded path to wearing make-up that you feel good about. They don’t test on animals, but even more impressive is that they have a history of empowering women through female-centered job creation many years before women were able to vote. Avon asserts principles of friendliness and responsibility while providing products of the highest quality hinged on guaranteed satisfaction.

5. African Extracts

African Extracts allows us to tap into the many natural beauty and health enhancers abundant in our unique continent. Their products are made largely from fresh extracts from plants rich in minerals and antioxidants that help to combat free radicals.

4 of the 5 brands listed here have NOT proven their humane testing status, and it doesnt matter what they say, it’s what they prove. The only reliable list is found http://www.humaneguide.co.za where brands have provided detailed assurances for every ingredient, for a start. Avon has never stopped animal testing, for the record. Buying from the Body Shop put almost 50 million pounds into Loreal’s till over two years, so one may as well just buy L’oreal. None of these are listed by Leaping Bunny, the international standard and only African Extracts is listed with Beauty Without Cruelty. Wooloerts is currently the only cosmetic brand which has proven humane manufacture claims and is listed with BWC.

Unfortunately Avon is apparently not 100% cruelty free. They do sell their products where animal testing is mandatory and pay other companies to do the dirty work.

I wish there were more “high end” cruelty free products. I absolutely love Lush products and although not mentioned here, Smashbox is a great cruelty free brand too.

Avon has always been on top of my cosmetic list. Not only are they a reputable and affordable brand but I wholeheartedly agree with their values. Their products rock and I’m so glad that they respect nature and empower women as well.

I am very adamant on using cruelty free brands as I am a huge animal lover. Essence is one of my favorite brands and they are super affordable too. I also LOVE The Body Shop because their products are cruelty free and are vegetarian too! Beauty without consequences (especially for animals) is the best kind of beauty!

I’ve been buying a lot of products from The Body Shop because they don’t test on animals and they have a Body Shop Foundation which gives to charity. I love supporting them and their products are fantastic.

It is so fab to let people know what products are cruelty free! Essence makes the most fab and funky products from nail art to make up brushes, so many different options to choose from. My absolute fave is the I ❤️ EXTREME Crazy volume mascara, I cannot live without it, it makes your lashes look super thick and long without any clumps. My other go to is the dual concealer pallete and concealer brush, the brush is amazing quality (and so affordable) the hairs do not fall out as so many other brushes on the market do, the concealer duo is so fab the two colors are bound to match many skin colors and it doesn’t cake or make you look dry!
All in all Essence is too wonderful! You can never just purchase one product because there as so many fun and amazing ones to try!

I love Lush – all their products smell so fresh. I wasn’t aware that Avon & Essence was cruelty free though! That’s really good to know. It just shows that I don’t have to look too far to find cruelty-free products. Also, many people think that Cruelty Free and Organic usually means it costs more, but this article just proved that that is not the case.
