How to up your multitasking game

How to up your multitasking game 1

Two things we all need more of in our lives? Time and money. The majority of us do not have the time for long and complicated beauty routines anymore, nor can we afford to spend a fortune on extra products we don’t really need. This is where the beauty of multitasking products come in – they save you time and money by offering more than one benefit in one product. Simplify your daily beauty routine and build some serious time-saving skills with these multitasking tips:

Skincare

Never skimp on good quality skincare products – even in the name of saving time! You don’t need to follow a 12-step Korean regime, but it’s essential to cover the basics – cleansing, treating, moisturising and SPF. There are some fantastic multipurpose skincare products out there that don’t skimp on performance. To save time on cleansing, we recommend using a cleanser that also acts as a makeup remover. Nikel Cleansing Milk with Immortelle (R479.00) is a rinseless cleanser that removes dirt and impurities, as well as every trace of makeup.

Manual exfoliating with a physical scrub is time-consuming and may be doing your skin more damage than it does good if you scrub too vigorously. To save time and preserve your skin’s barrier function, we recommend investing in some exfoliating pads like Skinderm Pure Exfoliating Glo Pads (R395.00). These handy pads contain AHA to exfoliate the surface of the skin as well as BHA to exfoliate within your pores. They are super quick and easy to use and go to work immediately. We like to use these at night and follow up with a hardworking serum like the Skinderm Brightening Elixir (R580.00). Thanks to vitamin C and mulberry extract it helps reduce the appearance of dark spots as well as boost radiance and even out the skin tone.

Face masks are usually one of the first beauty items to be excluded from a busy routine. That’s why we opt for a mask with a dual purpose. Filorga Scrub & Mask Reoxygenating Exfoliating Mask (R805.00) is both a mechanical and enzymatic scrub, combined with a reoxygenating mask. This unique combination deeply cleanses, exfoliates dead cells, tightens pores, smoothes the skin and enhances radiance. A real two-in-one anti-ageing product!

Every skincare regime has to incorporate a great quality moisturiser that deeply nourishes and hydrates the skin to lock in moisture. A no-fuss option like Lamelle Serra Restore Cream (R515.00) can be applied twice a day after your serum / treatment product. It offers intense hydration and has a soothing effect on the skin, plus it’s suitable for sensitive and dry skin as well as dehydrated skins. We’re also major fans of QMS! Medicosmetics 24H Cream (R1240.00). A clever moisturiser with a built-in clock; during the day it protects whilst at night it relaxes and regenerates the skin.

One of the biggest time savers (and something we use at least four or five days a week) is tinted skincare or sun care products that eliminate the step of applying foundation. Tinted skincare does not offer full coverage in the same way that foundation does, instead, it blurs or lightly covers imperfections, evens out the skin tone and gives you a healthy glow.

Get the best of both worlds with one of our trusted tinted multitaskers:

For sensitive skin, try Bioderma Photoderm AR SPF50+ Tinted Cream (R241.95). Designed for sensitive reactive skin, it has an anti-redness and soothing effect making it ideal for anyone whose skin is sensitive to sun care products.

For dry or dehydrated skin, try Optiphi Classic Hydration Tint SPF20 (R898.00). It offers a breathable, medium coverage, skin brightening and anti-ageing benefits, with advanced light protective filters, providing extended protection against UVA, UVB, visible light and IR-A, plus it gives the skin a boost of hydration.

For hyperpigmentation, try SVR Clairical CC Crème (R454.00). This all-in-one cream combines the effectiveness of a moisturising anti-pigmentation / brown spot cream and the coverage of a universal foundation.

For blemishes and imperfections, try Coverderm CC Cream For Face (R525.00). It contains 26 super-powered active ingredients to even and brighten skin tone, nourish, moisturise and soothe the skin. It protects against UVA & UVB rays and treats wrinkles, blemishes and irritation, plus it helps control sebum and tighten pores, resulting in fewer blemishes.

If blemishes or other skin imperfections are a concern for you, we recommend taking a daily nutritional supplement to ensure you’re getting all the nutrients you need for a healthy complexion. This takes all of five seconds and has a positive effect on both the skin and the body. Rites Vitality Champion Vita Skin Capsules (R210.00) contain vitamins A, C and E, zinc, selenium, evening primrose oil, grape seed extract and pine bark extract to help prevent acne and inflammation, promote healing, regulate oil production and balance out hormones.

Body care

When you’re too pressed for time to engage in a complicated skincare regime, we’re pretty certain body care ends up last on the list of priorities. To ensure the skin on our body stays moisturised, soft and smooth, we rotate three multipurpose products, each one offering a number of benefits. Whether you shave, wax, pluck or go for laser, FINO Soothe WOMAN (R69.95) is a must-have post hair removal balm. Not only does it moisturise the skin and relieve it from the tight and dry feeling it gets after shaving, it also contains enzymes that exfoliate the skin, preventing ingrown hair, razor burn and redness. It’s safe to use every day – not just on hair removal days.

Known as the ultimate multi-tasker, Eau Thermale Avène Thermal Spring Water (from R159.95) can be used for just about anything. Infused with nourishing trace elements and silicates, it soothes, softens, and restores skin’s natural balance. Use it following a surgical procedure; to combat redness; to calm skin irritation due to sunburn; to calm and soothe nappy rash; following shaving, a facial or exercise; during travel or sport to refresh the skin and cool down. It’s safe to use on the face and body and can be used by the whole family.

Hair care

For everyday hair care, some may argue you don’t need anything more than a nourishing shampoo and conditioner. We like to throw a third product in the mix, and can say with conviction that a hair oil is the number one hair care multitasker. All you need is a couple of drops, and we like to gently massage it into the lengths of the hair while it’s still wet after washing. INOAR Kálice (R780.00) contains vitamin E and seven precious vegetable oils: Argan, Myrrh, Macadamia, Ojon, Sweet almond, Jasmine and Rosemary. The result is a multifunctional oil that can be used on the hair, skin and body to moisturise, hydrate, restore, soften and protect. If your skin or hair is particularly dry or dehydrated, we recommend the gorgeously-scented Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Riche Multi-Purpose Nourishing Oil (R530.00). Designed for very dry skin, this rich oil also works wonders on very dry hair. It contains a combination of seven cold-pressed botanical oils and has the ability to intensely nourish the skin and hair without leaving a greasy residue.

Makeup

There are only so many ways to save time when it comes to applying makeup, which is why we’re all for multi-purpose items. If you can’t wear foundation without a primer, choose one that offers skincare benefits too. We love the essence You Better Work Gym-Proof Primer (R79.95), which not only ensures flawless makeup application, but also blurs imperfections and unevenness and reduces the size of pores. It’s also swear-proof, making it a great option for summer.

Save time and money with a two-in-one lip-and-cheek colour. Most of these can be used as eyeshadows too. Try the Yves Saint Laurent Baby Doll Kiss&Blush (R460.00) for a soft matte finish, or the Dr Paw Paw Tinted Balms (R99.00) for added hydration and soothing benefits.
