Quick reviews: The BSA team tests budget lippies under R200

A luxury lippie is a great treat from time to time, but in order to have a variety of colours on-hand, it’s more realistic to have some great budget options to choose from (especially for fashion colours). The BSA team took on the challenge of trying out pocket-friendly lippies – here’s what they thought.

Quick reviews: The BSA team tests budget lippies under R200 1

Avon Mark Liquid Lip Lacquer, R199.90

I really love the Avon brand and its products, so when I got this liquid lipstick to test I was quite excited. The application is smooth and smudge-free. The matte formula is nice and thick, which covers your lips quickly. The scent is sweet and pleasant, and not too over-powering. I love how the full colour stayed on my lips for almost 4 hours, it then later faded away and a light shade of the colour still remained on my lips. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who likes shiny, glossy lips.  – Meryl

Palladio Velvet Matte Cream Lip Color, R99.95

I’m always sceptical of matte lipsticks because they tend to dry out my lips, but I was surprised to find that this one didn’t at all. It stays true to its name – the texture looks and feels velvety on the lips. The formula feels very natural, almost like you’re not wearing lipstick at all. Although I noticed a bit coming off on my coffee cup, the colour lasts really long and I only find myself reapplying it about three times a day. Those of you who are “taste-sensitive” will be pleased to know this has a very subtle and pleasant taste, unlike a lot of budget lippies out there. – Anien

BioNike Defence Color Lip Velvet, R99.95

This lippie promises hydrated and protected lips and it delivers on that promise. The velvety lipstick lasts as long as most lipsticks do if you are not sipping and chewing most of the day. The intense colour comes with a “Glow Factor” that will remind you of Lil Mama’s Lip Gloss, your lips will be popping after application. If you are like me and not a red lipstick kind of human, the BioNike comes in 12 colours, and smells like candyfloss – bonus! – Matty

L.A Girl Lipify Stylo, R99.95

This intense one swipe lippie is exactly what it says, it goes on in just one swipe! It has a silky soft and creamy finish which moisturises your lips at the same time. I love the bold colours that this range has to offer which is great for seasons all year round. I missed the part where it said non retractable though so make sure not to twist it too much to avoid wasting this amazing product. – Sam

Yardley Bonnie Intense Matte Lipstick, R109.95

I love a matte lipstick, but the first time I tried this one I wasn’t convinced. It didn’t glide onto my lips easily and when applied, the colour looked really dry on my skin. However, once I followed my own advice, exfoliated my dehydrated wintery lips and applied a hydrating lip balm, I fell in love with this lipstick. Suddenly it looked vibrant on my lips instead of dry and it felt soft and luxurious. Best of all, the colour lasted really long and it didn’t make my lips feel dry and flaky. I would totally repurchase! – Anien

  1. I’m completely obsessed with the Avon Mark Liquid Lip Lacquer, im currently using the shades Man eater & Rosy flush.
These lippies are my personal favourite, it is smooth, smudge free, highly pigmented and long lasting. It has a velvet matter finish which i love. The application brush is perfect aswell.

  2. The Avon Mark Lip-glosses are lovely. However, when ordering the product it is difficult because the colours in the booklets differ compared to the actual colour.

  3. I’ve used the Avon Mark lippie for a while now and have to agree; smooth application and velvety feel is the order of the day. I absolutely love it!
