Surf’s up!

Ready to catch a wave of super-exciting colour? MAC’s lastest bunch of limited edition lovelies, Surf Baby, serves up a bold pop of colour in the midst of a bleak winter.

The poster girl for MAC Surf Baby. I love that she’s not your typical California bronzed beach bunny, ‘cos pale Kirsten Stewart-esque girls like frolicking in the waves too!

Now we know… we know… it’s odd to see such a blatantly summery collection wash up on SA shores in the middle of the chilly season, but don’t forget that its sunny and bright on the other side of the globe right now – and MAC, being v. v. current, won’t release their goodies a season later to suit. If it’s new, fresh and fabulous, we’re getting it.

Anyhoo, the Surf Baby collection includes of three different types of bronzers (two pressed, one stick) and a host of brave new colour cosmetics. We got sent a few samples to play with and thought we’d give you a closer look…

First up, let’s take a look at the Skinsheen Bronzer Stick, R275. The shade we got is called Gilty Bronze, a shimmering copper. It’s definitely too dark for my uber-pale skin tone, but will look beautiful on a warmer face. Application is easy; just glide it onto your cheeks, temples or anywhere you want to add a touch of bronze and blend, blend, blend.

On the left I used Gilty Bronze to make a ‘streep’ and then blended it in on the right.

Now get a load of what, for me, is the piece de resistance of the lot, Surf Baby! Cheek Powder in My Paradise, R280. It’s the most beautiful coral-coloured blush with a pretty gold hibiscus flower overspray pattern.

Gorgeous, right?

At first glance, I thought it might be a bit too Oros-y, but it goes on sheer to create a flattering peachy coloured cheek with just a slight hint of shimmer – enough to lift the colour and catch the light, but not so sparkly as to draw attention to fine lines. Check it out:

…and with flash.

Another Surf baby surprise? This Lustre lipstick in Bust Out!, R155.

Upon rolling it out the tube, I couldn’t help but wonder who this ‘Barney the dinosaur’ coloured hue would suit. However, much like the cheek powder, it looks very different on skin.?

Take a look:

Bust Out! is on the right. See how it’s really more of a muted mauve on skin?
lips flash
It looks even prettier with flash. As for that colour on the right, it’s one of the limited edition Surf Baby Lipglasses called Good Lovin’, R140. It’s a subtle pale and pearly peach.

We also received a lovely frost champagne-coloured Eye Shadow called Short Shorts, R150. It’s the perfect highlighter for your brow bone and sure to flatter any skin tone. We also liked the fab, self-sharpening Powerpoint Eye Pencil in Blue Noon, R145. It’s a pretty teal colour with a bit of gold pearl in it. You can’t really see the gold pigment in it as it’s so fine, but it’s present enough to add a subtle shimmer to the teal.

Look how Short Shorts twinkles under flash.

In case you didn’t know, blue liner is a big deal right now… just look how good it looks on Alicia Keys.

Fresh, sexy and mod… not a hint of ABBA-esque eighties-ness in sight…

In all, MAC Surf Baby Is a bold, fun-lovin’ collection sure to add a pop of colour to the most miserable of winter’s days. Next time you’re in store, be sure to check it out.

Once again. The packaging looks nice, reminds me oof other surfing brand like roxy. But the poster girl scared me a bit with her looks, i think because of the pale eyebrows.??
