The Midas Touch

New make-upIf make-up is anything to go by, 2012 is going to be a golden year – burnished accents and honeyed shimmers are hot highlights for eyes, lips and bone structure.

‘It’s a shiny new year ahead and though the tourists may have gone home, the summer festivities are far from over, so don’t be afraid to add a dash of bling into your make-up mix to celebrate what’s left of the party season,’ says hair and make-up artist Charmaine de Kock. Be dramatic and eye-catching with touches of shimmery gold or silver – try Shiseido Goldlights H1creme eye shadow, R265, to add golden accents to your lips, cheekbones and the bridge of your nose. After applying foundation to your face and neck, use a dash on each area to highlight a nude look or as a shimmering base before applying colour.

For eyes, after applying a base of primer or foundation, use Shiseido Goldlights H1 on the lids and the inner corners of your eyes, using a brush to blend away any streaky lines. Then dab MAC Vanilla color pigment, R230, only on the inner corners – just a tiny amount over the gold – and work in gently with a soft brush or your ring finger. Apply a fine line of black liquid eye liner on the upper lash line, and a bronze brown liner (try MAC Teddy, R155) along the lower lashes, blending it well to keep it subtle. To emphasise the eyes, use gold MAC Powersurge eyeliner, R155, on the inside of your bottom lash line. Apply a bronze brown eye shadow on the outside corner of the eye, blending it into the socket line with a soft blending brush. Finish off with four coats of mascara on the upper lashes and three on the bottom – thick, spiky eyelashes are in vogue this season.

Go with deep coral and warm orange lip colours for 2012, says hair and make-up artist Samantha Laura Kaye – they are friendlier and more sensual than their cooler counterparts, and great for either day or night. To add a dash of bling and create an eye-catching holographic effect, Sam recommends adding a gold shimmer on the lips over the coral base.

If you have a prominent nose or eyes, avoid using gold, glitters or shimmers on those areas as it adds emphasis. Rather go for dark, matte smoky eyes and use gold on your lips instead, or as summer melts into autumn, go for a glossy wine-red lip colour. ‘Lip looks have gone from deep reds to even the purples that are maybe inspired by the latest couture shows in Paris,’ says celebrity make-up artist Luis Casco.
