You know her best from the radio and TV shows like Top Billing and Tropika Island of Treasure, but now, Natalie Becker’s jetted off to the states to further her acting career in New York. (As it is, she’s already worked with stars like John Malkovich and Meg Ryan and racked up a SAFTA which is our version of the Oscar, but girl’s got plans to take things to a whole new level…)
Being no stranger to glamour, we thought she was the perfect star to interview in regards to her favourite beauty products
What’s keeping you busy right now?
I’m currently in New York City to expand my acting career and develop my humanitarian work and other creative passions. I write a blog called ‘Natalie in New York’ out of the city and it’s on my website.
It’s a way for me to share my experiences here, offer some useful travel advice and give tips about the city while keeping in touch with readers and fans in SA. I’ve also recently had a movie premier on BBC worldwide called Atlantis, in which I play the character Ariad.
What’s the one cosmetic item you’d simply DIE without?
I absolutely love Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat highlighter in number 3; it’s a magical formula that sorts out all types of sins. I also LOVE Sephora’s new Advanced Lash Booster mascara for volume and length that makes your lashes look spectacular! (For those of you who don’t know, Sephora is a chain of large cosmetics stores in the states).
If we were to turf out your make-up bag, what would we find in there?
The YSL Touche Eclat and Sephora mascara, Armani Luminous Silk foundation in number 8 (it gives perfect moisturising coverage that lasts all day), Korres Lip Butter in Pomegranate, MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation in C40 and MAC Bronzing Powder. (Armani and Korres aren’t available in SA, but you can buy both brands online at Strawberrynet.com).
What are your favourite skin care products?
I really love the Dermalogica range and stocked up on lovely travel-sized kits from Wellness Warehouse in Cape Town before I left for my travels. I find it gentle, yet very effective as well as quite natural. You can really see the difference in your skin after being on this range and I especially love the Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant; a facial in a tube! I’ve also discovered Josie Maran’s skin care range containing Argan oil at Sephora.
And how’d you take care of that bod?
I believe exercise, fresh air and lots of water is the answer, so I try to run in nature daily. I also enjoy dancing, yoga and pilates and am thinking about taking up a new dance form to help keep me in shape. I also use a mixture of natural oils and love the smell of coconut, vanilla, musc and olive on my skin. Clarins have a lovely range of body products. I particularly like Clarins High Definition Body Lift cream Clarin Self-tanning Instant Gel as its the BEST for a healthy glow! Sisley is another favourite. Sisley Botanical Intensive Bust Compound is one of the best natural products on the market. (FYI, you can find Sisley products at selected Woolies stores).
What products do you use on your hair?
I use a range of natural products from Global Keratin’s Hair Taming System range. They don’t contain sodium laurel sulphates that dry out the hair.
Which perfumes do you wear?
My signature scent for a long time has been Narciso Rodrigues Musc Oil for her and I’ve just discovered Chloe Love by Chloe at Sephora. It’s on my wish list!
What nail polish colours are you rocking at the mo?
I’m loving Essie’s perfect pale pink, Demure Vixen.
Who’s in your little black book of beauty?
Palladium Hair Company in the new Cape Quarter in Greenpoint are my favourite hairdressers in the universe! They do such an amazing job with my unruly mane and they are the best bunch of people under one roof! Caroline Cowley (083 925 2427) does the BEST lash extensions in Cape Town and Claudia (073 966 7410) does the best waxes! Wellness Warehouse are fabulous for great massages and their range of beauty products include some of my fave natural products. In New York, Damali NYC is a one-stop Beauty Concierge and Studio that gives you ‘all access’ beauty with range of services under one roof, including eyelashes, facials, and other wellness services.
What’s the best beauty advice you’ve ever received or have to give?
It comes from the inside, literally! Even great beauty products need a good canvas and this can be achieved with regular exercise, drinking lots of water, eating fresh foods and taking some good supplements. Meditation is also a great tool for keeping healthy and vital; you’ll see that people who meditate and have been meditating for years look quite ageless, so that would be one of my top bits of advice.
