What we say:
‘Ok, I’ll admit it. Disappearing for two hours on a Friday afternoon for a back and neck massage and facial is why I came to work for BeautySouthAfrica. It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it – and then report back to you folks.
‘At first I was a little apprehensive about a hot candle massage, as I’ve read so many Cosmo Dates Gone Wrong stories with candles and wax and massages that I wasn’t keen on becoming another statistic. Luckily, the wonderful Maxine (my masseuse) explained that the oil from the soy candles she was burning was only a slightly higher temperature than body temperature. The candle is burned in the room for aromatherapy benefits, but the heat from the oil not only helps you to relax it also nourishes and softens the skin. When the description on Equinox Spa’s massage list said "total relaxation", they weren’t kidding. I caught myself dozing off a few times during the 60-minute massage as I felt most of the knots in my shoulder melt away under Maxine’s fingers.
‘The massage was then followed by a 60-minute Nimue Maintenance Facial. I don’t particularly like Nimue products but the cleansing, conditioning and exfoliating was such a treat I overlooked it. The exfoliation was followed by an "extraction", which is basically the removal of blackheads and unclogging of pores. I did experience a little discomfort as the problem areas on your skin get "pinched" between earbuds, but it’s a process I highly recommend to anyone with oily skin and clogged pores. I’ll even go so far as to book a monthly session solely for extractions.
‘It was great to learn the Nimue facials are specifically adapted to each person, and the beauty therapists really do take an interest in your skin type to provide this service effectively. The consultation may be quick, but it’s in-depth and gets to the center of your skin concerns.
‘As an added bonus, and just when I thought it was all over, Equinox put me to sleep one last time with a complimentary scalp massage. What an afternoon!’
