Acquizhen organic skincare review

Wednesday, 5 October 2011

Acquizhen is a new organic skin care brand formulated by an aesthetic surgeon and skin specialist, Dr. Erich Schulte. Most of the ingredients used in the products are harvested from the wild in a way that’s sustainable and kind to the environment.

I was given their cutesy little sample pack the other day, the Acquizhen Good to Go kit, R600, so I could get up close and personal with the products and can now say that, in general, I’m really very impressed.

It contains a soap, day and night cream, cleanser and exofoliating mask.

Many of the organic skin care goodies I’ve tried in the past have all been rather lovely, but I didn’t feel as though any contained the goods to realllly make a difference when it comes to fending off Father Time. Acquizhen, however, contains a superb mix of very powerful organic anitoxidants.

For example, the entire range save for the soap all contain reservatrol, an amazing grape-derived antioxidant that’s causing a bit of a buzz in the beauty world right now. When applied topically, it can protect against sun damage, improve collagen production and reduce cell damage.

Of everything I used in the kit, I really liked the Nurturing Night Cream, R650.

Acquizhen Nurturing Night Cream, R650.

It’s got a lovely rich, gel-like texture that doesn’t feel sticky or heavy on your face and has a nice, light refreshing floral scent. Aside from the reservatrol, it includes other antioxidants like blackberry, alfalfa and white tea extracts as well as a mildly exofoliating papaya extract. It also makes use of kigelia extract, (it comes from a tree that grows in the states, Asia and Oz), which has skin-firming properties.

The Replenishing Day Cream, R650, has very similar ingredients, but also includes Para Cress, a weird-looking plant that, if you chew it, has a numbing effect on your mouth! This mini botox-like effect causes it to have a relaxing effect on your muscles at a totally micro level, helping to reduce the appearing of fine lines. Sounds crazy, right? But don’t worry, I’m wearing it right now and have never noticed even so much as a tingle and had I not read about it, would never have known. My only gripe is that is doesn’t contain an SPF and absorbs into your skin very, very quickly, making it a little difficult for those who like a bit of slip on their skin to assist in the application of foundation.

I also LOVED the Sunrise Soap, R130. It smells like soft, sweet oranges and, thanks to a generous whack of cocoa butter, it creates a deliciously creamy lather on your skin.

Having used it, I reckon going back to the very ‘regular’ soap I was using beforehand would feel kinda tragic and sad…
