Eau Thermale Avène: A #SourceOfHope for eczema

Eau Thermale Avène: A #SourceOfHope for eczema 1

Eczema has become one of the most common skin conditions in the world. Did you know, it is estimated that up to 10% of all people experience eczema at some point in their lives?

Eczema is a condition in which the skin develops dry, itchy, red and sometimes cracked, patches. It often takes on the appearance of a rash, and affected areas tend to look and feel extremely dry and sometimes thickened. In extreme cases, the skin may form blisters and sores. For many people it causes unbearable discomfort, which has a terrible effect on daily life.

Whilst the exact cause of eczema is unknown, scientists believe that it develops when the body’s immune system has an overactive response to an irritant. That’s why eczema is more common among people who suffer from allergies and asthma.

For many, winter is a common time for flare-ups. Cold air, wind, heaters and air conditioning may aggravate the skin and increase dryness and sensitivity, worsening the symptoms of eczema.

Thanks to Eau Thermale Avène, the number one dermo-cosmetic brand in Europe, safe and affordable relief is at hand for the whole family.

Eau Thermale Avène has specialised in sensitive skin for over 25 years. They have identified that the key to managing eczema-symptoms and sensitised skin is to use products that are highly tolerant, very gentle, and free from harsh ingredients. The iconic Eau Thermale Avène Thermal Spring Water has been clinically shown by over 150 studies to calm, soothe and soften the skin. This thermal spring water follows a 40-year journey through the Cevennes Mountain aquifier, emerging clean and pure in the village of Avène in France. Through its journey the water is infused with trace elements and silicates, resulting in a perfectly balanced mineral composition ideal for sensitive skin. This water is captured directly at its source using sterile cosmetic technology so that all of its nutrients and unique properties are preserved.

Recognising the massive demand for eczema-relieving products that are safe for daily use and free from harsh and harmful ingredients, Avène created the XeraCalm A.D and Cicalfate ranges. Both ranges contain Avène Thermal Spring Water and is suitable for the whole family.

Avène XeraCalm was designed to relieve very dry, itchy and eczema-prone skin by replenishing the skin’s protective barrier, protecting its moisture content and soothing itchiness and discomfort. Avène Cicalfate repairs, purifies and soothes irritated and damaged skin, and dry lesions. These products help reduce the risk of bacteria proliferation and accelerate the healing process.

Avène has partnered with five South African influencers who share one common concern: eczema. Over a month-long period, these influencers will swap out their current skincare regimes for a tailored Avène skincare regime. They’ll be using Avène Thermal Spring Water along with products from the XeraCalm A.D and Cicalfate ranges in the hope of soothing, minimising and healing their eczema. We’ll be following and documenting their journeys every step of the way.

Let’s meet the participants:

Le’Chelle Aldridge (@lechellealdridge)

“As a baby, I had eczema all over my body and as a small child I suffered from terrible eczema on the inside of my arms. This would flare up with certain foods or at certain times of the year. I remember scratching my arms until they were raw and my mom tried almost every eczema cream to soothe it, without success. As an adult, my eczema flares up with stress and certain acidic foods.

When my eczema flares up due to stress it’s often exacerbated because I then stress about getting rid of the eczema along with my initial stress. It’s a vicious cycle. I also have ZERO self-control to stop scratching.

I’ll be testing out the Avène products for the purpose of skin texture and I have a friend whose baby has eczema/dry patches on her back and arms. We’re hoping to see a big change in the skin on Rose’s back because they’ve tried many (natural and cortisone) creams to help.”

Refiloe Nkoane (@fiiloe.vera)

“I’ve struggled with eczema for the longest time, in fact, I’ve been struggling with it my whole life. Eczema affects my self-esteem in my day-to-day life. I’m super insecure about it and I always try to make sure that I hide it as much as I can by wearing clothes that cover it so that other people don’t see.

I’ve used various ointments and over-the-counter creams. They helped for a while, but the eczema still came back!

I’m excited to use the Avène products and to see the results after using them for a month. I can’t really say my eczema will definitely be gone, but I’m looking forward to seeing it relieved and a lot calmer.”

Dr. Dudu Kgoebane-Masoeu (@dudu_k_)

“I’ve had eczema all my life. I suffer from seasonal allergies and my eczema is worsened during seasonal changes. Growing up, my parents never really knew how to treat it.

My eczema-prone areas (neck, chest, behind my knees and inner elbows) get extremely irritated when they come into contact with clothing, especially in winter when I like wearing layers. In warmer seasons, it doesn’t look good when I’m wearing a short dress or short sleeves because the first thing people look at is dry, flared up, irritated patches of skin that stick out like a sore thumb.

Using the Avène XeraCalm A.D range, I’m hoping to achieve soothed skin, with little-to-no irritation. I’m hoping for long-term relief with continuous use of the products, so that I don’t have to rely on corticosteroids.”

Kathryn Rossiter (@becomingyou)

“Both my kids (now aged 9 & 12) have had eczema for as long as they can remember. My son has very dry skin and his skin barrier is compromised all over his body resulting in rough skin and then inflamed, red, infected patches during flare-ups. One of the best ways to avoid these is by applying a lotion every day, twice a day but he is resistant to that as he doesn’t like creams! My daughter has dry patches that get inflamed and infected if she scratches them. They both scratch in their sleep so it is difficult to control!

They have disrupted sleep due to scratching, find it hard to concentrate in class due to the itching and have had to stop certain sports such as swimming due to the extra dying effect of the chlorine in the pool. I have also noticed that my son is quite self-conscious and won’t remove his top around his friends because people ask why he has a rash and he is embarrassed.

I’m hoping that the Avène products will smooth their skin and improve the skin barrier. We’re also holding thumbs for less dryness, less itching and less flare-ups!”

Melanie Ramjee (@hypress)

“Both my kids were born with dry skin which was later diagnosed as eczema. We have tried several products on the market, some of which are too expensive, some work for a month and then don’t anymore.

My children are always uncomfortable with clothes on. My toddler hates to wear clothes and is always miserable in the mornings. The same applies to my eight-year old. He was a more passive child so it was easier to deal with. My daughter is just not happy.

We are hoping for positive results to ensure an easier summer for my little girl. Avène products are within my budget range so if they work it would also help my pocket.”
