How to get your skin wedding-ready (and avoid breakouts on the day!) 1

The lead-up to her wedding day can be an extremely busy and stressful time for a bride. There is so much to plan and organise on top of the pressures of everyday life. It’s important to pay extra attention to your health and skincare during this time, as stress and fatigue can result in a blow to your immune system (which increases your chances of getting sick) and can leave you battling with blemishes, dullness and dehydration.

What is every bride’s nightmare? Waking up with a pimple on her wedding day! An even bigger nightmare? A full-blown breakout in the days leading up to the big event. While it is not possible to entirely eliminate the chances of that happening, there is a lot you can do to prep your skin in the lead-up to your wedding. Not only can you increase radiance and hydration, but you can also reduce your chances of developing blemishes.

To ensure your skin looks it’s very best on your wedding day, start taking the following into consideration as early on in your engagement as possible:

Oral contraception
Oral contraceptive pills can work wonders in clearing the skin of blemishes, but if the hormone composition isn’t a good fit for you, it may lead to an increase in blemishes. That’s why it is crucial to not change your oral contraception within three months of your wedding date. This includes going on the pill, going off the pill or changing over to a different pill. If you’re planning on doing any of these things, make sure you still have plenty of time before your wedding (six months or more) to ensure your skin has enough time to adjust.

Professional skincare treatments
Six months before our editor’s wedding she started going for peels at Skin Renewal every six weeks. The initial reason was to clear recurring blemishes and to prevent them from coming back. Guess what? Her skin had never been clearer than during those six months, and on her wedding day, it was 100% blemish-free (we have to add though, that she started a great skincare regime consisting of Lamelle products and Heliocare SPF after her first visit, which definitely helped in conjunction with the treatments).

Professional peels have the ability to slough away dry and dead skin cells which have a tendency to clog up pores and result in pimples. They stimulate the skin’s cell turnover, help fade marks and boost radiance. If you’re able to make the investment and go for regular peels, you’ll find it worth every Rand.

Good quality skincare regime
If you’re already using good quality products on your skin twice a day, stick to this regime. You may want to consider adding a retinol serum to your night-time regime, or a vitamin C serum to your day-time regime. If you have any skin care concerns that need addressing such as pigmentation or dullness, it’s best to tackle these early. It can take time for your skin to adjust when you use new products, so you shouldn’t introduce anything new in the three months leading up to your wedding.

If you don’t have an existing regime, now is the time to start one! Invest in products that contain good quality ingredients and don’t forget to apply an SPF every day (even when it’s cloudy!). If you’re not sure where to start, you’ll benefit from chatting to a therapist at your nearest Skin Renewal. They can assess your skin and recommend products best suited to you and within your budget.

Diet and exercise
A healthy diet and exercise is not only important to ensure you stay healthy during your engagement and wedding, but it also helps maintain a beautiful complexion. When you exercise, you get a natural glow due to better blood flow. And with regards to diet, we all know that a diet rich in fresh fruit and veg, lean protein and healthy fibres is essential for both a healthy body and skin. Avoid unhealthy fats, sugar and processed food as much as possible. If you think you’re not getting all the essential nutrients from your diet, invest in supplements that replace the nutrients you’re lacking.

What to do if there’s an emergency
The truth is that even if you do all the above correctly, we can never guarantee that you won’t wake up with a pimple on your wedding day. Sometimes these things happen regardless of the cautionary steps you’ve taken. If it happens a day or two before, go to your skincare therapist or skin care doctor! It may be worth asking them if they would mind being on standby during the week before your wedding. Depending on the blemish, they may be able to drain it or treat it with topical actives such as Salicylic acid.

If this happens to you on the morning of your wedding, try your best to relax. The chances are your makeup artist is well-equipped to cover it up beautifully. After all, concealer works wonders. DO NOT FIDDLE OR SQUEEZE – this is vital! You could make it far worse. Hold a block of ice against the blemish to bring down the swelling, and cleanse the skin with a gentle cleanser. Once the wedding is over you can apply a Salicylic based spot treatment to heal the blemish within a couple of days.
