Plan your skincare treatments according to the season

Plan your skincare treatments according to the season 1

Most people make subtle changes to their skincare routine depending on the season. In winter, when the air is drier, they might switch to more hydrating formulas. When it’s hot, they’ll probably use more sunscreen as they spend more time outdoors. In the same way that vary your routine depending on the season, you should be doing the same with your in-office treatments. Sure, ‘tis always the season to take care of your skin, but some procedures, particularly those that cause your skin to be more sensitive to light, are definitely more suited to winter.

Let’s help you create a skincare treatment calendar, shall we?

Summer ready
When the weather’s good people tend to expose their skin to a lot more sun. For this reason, this isn’t the best period to undergo invasive treatments as they leave your skin more vulnerable to the damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation. So, what should you do in summer?

Your best bet is to invest in hydrating treatments as well as those that maintain your skin as well as strengthen it to prep for the ‘big guns’ you can reach for in winter. Great hydrating options include moisturising facials that only include a very mild, superficial peel or gentle exfoliation like a microdermabrasion session. A good example would be our Mesoglow facial that involves both a microdermabrasion treatment followed by transdermal mesotherapy.

Transdermal mesotherapy is a fantastic way to enhance the penetration of serums with specially chosen active ingredients to target a particular concern, be it dehydration, pigmentation or premature ageing. Also, don’t worry when you hear the word ‘mesotherapy’. This is the transdermal kind that doesn’t involve any needles. Instead, we use a machine that emits electrical pulses to painlessly push beneficial ingredients into the deeper layers of your skin. Most patients find the experience very relaxing.

Another way to boost the penetration of products as well as stimulate the creation of new collagen is via a superficial skin needling treatment like a Dermapen session. Naturally, this involves needles, but we apply a topical anesthetic beforehand, so you don’t have to worry about pain. If you’re a needling newbie, a Dermapen treatment essentially involves running an electric pen across the areas you want to treat. The pen sports an adjustable needle that zips in and out and create tiny little puncture wounds in your skin. (Don’t worry, these heal within a day and the only fall out is looking a bit sunburned for about 12 to 24 hours after the treatment and you could easily cover this with make-up, should you wish.) It’s during this time that you should avoid the sun, but after that you can carry on as usual, making this quick and easy minimal downtime treatment perfectly suitable to the summer months.

Winter wonderful
Ah winter! The season for steaming cups of hot chocolate, Netflix series binge marathons in bed… and more aggressive skincare treatments! This is the time to go for a stronger peel. To hit up that laser. To ask your Dermapen therapist to make that adjustable needle just that little bit longer. Obviously, exposing your skin to any kind of sun, regardless of the season, after a treatment such as these is a no-no, but at least in winter it’s a lot easier to avoid.

Ideal chilly weather treatments include much deeper peels like our 3D Peel, TCA peels and Cosmelan and Dermamelan peels. All of these will help to reveal fresher, more youthful-looking skin but can target a gamut of issues that include fine lines, acne, superficial acne scarring and all types of pigmentation – from post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation (the dark mark often left behind after an inflammatory situation, like a pimple) to stubborn, hormonally-driven melasma. (Picking a peel to suit can be tricky, so it’s always best to have one of our doctors assess your skin’s condition as they’ll be able to prescribe the one that’ll suit you best.)

Winter is also the ideal time to undergo laser resurfacing treatments like Pearl Fusion, CO2 Laser and Fraxel DUAL as well as light-based pigmentation-blitzing treatments like Limelight. Just because these treatments are more intensive, doesn’t mean they come with more downtime. You could have a Fraxel DUAL treatment and happily go back to work the very next day. However, your skin will be a lot more sensitive to the sun. Also, if you were pigmentation prone before, a laser session can dramatically increase your potential for dark marks if you expose your skin to the sun too soon after having it. For this reason, it’s best to limit these types of treatments to the winter months.

The bottom line
Much like your wardrobe, your skincare treatment schedule should change with the season as certain procedures can leave your skin a lot more sensitive to the sun. This doesn’t mean there’s very little you can do it the warmer months. Summer is the ideal time for less invasive, hydrating treatments that prep for skin for the more intense one’s you can pencil in for winter.
