Six skincare products our editor is loving this winter

Winter can be very harsh on the skin, which means you need to up your skincare game to ensure dehydration, dryness or flakiness doesn’t set in. Take a peek into our editor’s current skincare regime below and see which products she’s loving this winter.

Six skincare products our editor is loving this winter 1

Lamelle Serra Restore Cream, R515.00
For years I believed that my skin was oily, and that it was this oiliness that caused my stubborn breakouts. Imagine my surprise when, upon a visit to Skin Renewal, I discovered that my skin was actually dehydrated, and was over-producing sebum as a result. Suddenly, a deep love for skin barrier-restoring moisturisers was born! Serra Restore Cream is one of the best I’ve used. Designed for dry and dehydrated skin, it’s a corrective lipid replacement cream containing patented barrier technology that mimics naturally occurring lipids in the epidermis (in other words, it restores and maintains the skin’s barrier function while providing a boost of hydration). I’ll use it all year round but it’s definitely an essential for winter. My skin feels plumper and healthier when I use it, and my hydration levels are probably the best they’ve ever been. It’s not fragranced and has a lovely rich texture that melts into the skin. For such an effective moisturiser, it’s really well priced too.

Dermalogica Prisma Protect SPF30, R1099.00
As a digital editor I spend a lot of time in front of screens. I’ve never worried too much about it until recently when studies about the effects of blue light on the skin caught my (and the rest of the world’s) attention. I’m religious about my sunscreen and don’t go a day without SPF, so I loved the duality of this moisturiser. The premise is unique: instead of just protecting the skin against UV light, it actually uses it to the skin’s advantage. Light-activated technology converts visible light into increased radiance, giving the skin a natural glow whilst protecting it against free radical damage, pollution and UV rays. It is very hydrating and can be used as your day cream with the added benefits of broad-spectrum sun protection. It feels light on the skin and has a lovely fresh scent.

Nikel Nikelhidris Eye Cream, R869.00
At a first glance you may be confused about this eye cream’s packaging. It looks like a beautiful block of ice! This multi-purpose cream promises to brighten dark circles and soothe swollen eyelids while injecting moisture and improving the signs of ageing. It contains a vitamin complex that slows down the development of wrinkles and fine lines. I really love the rich, creamy texture of this eye cream. It melts into my skin without any effort on my part and does a really good job in keeping the area moisturised. I also noticed that it helped minimise dark circles after a late night and that it just makes the eye area look brighter and healthier. It doesn’t hurt that it has a lovely soothing scent too.

Cold Pressed Skin Kale Algae + Vitamin C Activated Moss Superfood Moisturiser, R504.44
Relatively new to the SA market, this skincare brand is based on the philosophy that what we put onto our skin should be as healthy and natural as what we put into our bodies. This super-green moisturiser is packed with nutrients like phyto-actives, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. It promises to combat urban pollutants while brightening and hydrating the skin. Vegan, natural and cruelty-free, it contains broccoli, kale, algae, green tea and other well-known superfoods. I really like the texture of this moisturiser; it’s in-between runny and thick, and it has a matte consistency that reminds me of clay. As soon as I apply it my skin feels silky and moisturised, and this feeling lasts all day long. I used this during one of the coldest weeks in June, and I never felt like I needed additional moisture on my skin! Judging by the ingredients I was worried about what the scent would be like, but I’m happy to report that it is very subtle – no traces of broccoli whatsoever!

NeoStrata Sheer Physical Protection SPF50, R525.00
This SPF is a must-have for anyone that doesn’t like white, thick and creamy sunscreens. It’s sheer and very runny; I made the mistake the first time of turning the bottle over without caution and had far too much come out for one use. If you’re used to a thicker white formula this may take some getting used to, as there is no need to rub the product into the skin – instead, you can just gently pat it in as the sheer tint blends with your natural skin tone. It contains antioxidants and a polyhydroxy acid to strengthen and protect the skin’s moisture barrier. It offers broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection and is suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin. I love that it doesn’t look like I am wearing sunscreen when I have this product on, and that it is completely matte on my skin. Though this would be great for summer (especially if you are into sports, it’s a no-nonsense kind of product to apply before you head out, plus it’s matte), I love it for the colder months as it makes my skin feel soft and hydrated. Plus it’s safe to use post-procedure, so it’s a no brainer for me to apply it after the peels I go for during winter.

Lush 7 – 3 Reusable Cleansing Wipe, R34.50
Did you know that face wipes make up 93% of the material found in sewer blockages? I love a face wipe as much as the next girl, but I’m becoming more and more weary to use them as I try cut back on waste and use less non-recyclable / non-biodegradable products in my day-to-day life. This new wipe from Lush’s Naked range is a God-send! Not only does it have zero packaging, but it’s reusable and biodegradable. You simply wet your face, splash a bit of water on one side of the wipe, and glide it gently across your face to build up a lather. It cleanses and removes makeup, and when you’re done, you simply rinse it and leave it on a drainable soap dish to dry for next time. Like all Lush products it has a gorgeous scent. It can be used for a couple of weeks after the first use, making it really economical. I love that it’s gentle, yet cleans my face thoroughly. It doesn’t remove my waterproof mascara completely, but foundation, eyeshadow and blush are gone within seconds. I’d highly recommend this to anyone.
