Men’s grooming made easy 2
Gone are the days when guys just rolled out of bed, hopped into the shower, and headed out the door in 15 minutes – toothpaste stained shirt and all.

There’s been a serious shift in male grooming habits, with a wide variety of products to choose from – and us ladies certainly appreciate the effort. Soft skin, silky hair and perfectly-groomed beards? We’re here for it!

Your daily routine

Normal skin: cleanse, shave, tone, apply aftershave, moisturise (if you have bags under your eyes, don’t be afraid to add an eye cream to your routine).

Oily skin: use an exfoliating shower gel, shave, tone, and apply aftershave.

Ingrown hairs: cleanse, scrub, shave, tone, spot treat, apply aftershave, and moisturise.

Beard gang: cleanse, shave, tone, apply aftershave, do some beard grooming and moisturise.

Our #MensGrooming Trial Team share their favourite products:

Men’s grooming made easy 3

1. Beaucience Mens Revitalising Face & Body lotion, R94.99

The verdict:

This face and body lotion makes grooming easy. I use it on my whole body and the natural ingredients make it good for sensitive skin. I apply it in the morning and at night and it makes my skin soft with a fresh smell. It also has anti-ageing ingredients. – Kyle Collins

2. FishFingers Medium Hold Shape Defining Wax, R109, FishFingers Hardcore Hold Matt Styling Gel, R89,95, FishFingers Shape Defining Wax, R109,95

The verdict:

The simple, bright packaging is fun with 3 ranges in the brand, Red = SuperFish, for strong hold; Blue = Fish Orginal, for medium hold and the Silver = Fish Platinum for Sophisticated hold. All developed on Soho, London. The smell when opening the tub is a nice rich vanilla/coconut aroma that gets a thumbs up. I have a fine, unruly bedhead at the best of times, but with a new haircut I decided I’d like a sharper look, so I tested the range. The wax is pretty smooth and not too sticky, easy to work through your fingertips and into your hair. It took a few days to work out the right amount, but still being able to remould the hair into about 4 different styles throughout the day was well worth it! I think it’ll be a regular on the bathroom shelf. – Daniel Quixley-Smith

3. L’Occitane Energising Eye Gel Cédrat, R425

The verdict:

The bags and dark rings under the eye work for someone like actor Benicio Del Toro. On a regular male mug it looks like you’re fighting a hangover or the hay fever attack from hell. This tube of energising eye gel is great. I like the pleasant citrus scent after applying it onto the bags and area around the eyes. On dry winter skin you might feel a slight sting, but it’s gone in an instant and there’s no stickiness.

The blurb on the tube promises the gel will fight visible signs of fatigue, dark rings and puffiness. It seems to make a difference, but the real proof would be if someone comments on how good you look. Men show their age around the eyes, apparently, so there’s another reason to try it.

*Cedrat is another name for the citron, a large, fragrant citrus fruit. I googled it.* – Pieter van der Lugt

4. Six Man Men’s Moisturising Cream, R405

The verdict:

The big surprise with this cream is that it’s not creamy. Instead, it’s quite thin and squirts out. A little goes a long way, so don’t pump too vigorously. The scent is soft, the cream goes on smoothly and doesn’t make your face feel sticky. The promise is skin softening and anti-shine and it delivers. I also really like the Six Man Men’s Shaving Face Wash, R275. Quite amazing how soft the beard and smooth the shave is afterwards. Definitely worth trying as a standard part of your shaving routine. – Pieter van der Lugt

5. Vaseline Men Even Tone Anti-bump Moisturiser, R80

The verdict:

I’ve been loving the Vaseline Men range. I buy most of the products. I grew up using Vaseline, so when I saw they had a dedicated range for men it was an easy choice. I especially love the anti-bump moisturiser. It helps reduce razor bumps from shaving and soothes skin. It absorbs quickly and provides relief from dryness. – Kuhle

6. Bionike Defence Man Rebalancing Moisturiser, R95

The verdict:

I always look for products that are proven to work and that use premium ingredients. This is a really good moisturiser, I absolutely love it. It lasts for several hours. I could see visible results in a relatively short time frame and it protects against harmful environmental damage. I like the fact that it comes in a tube, it’s compact and felt premium. I’m hooked! – Nic Morkel

7. Nivea Men Active Energy Fresh Look Face Wash Gel, R129,95

The verdict:

I only use Nivea products on my skin. The Energy Fresh range is my favourite. I really like the fresh feeling and cooling effect. It cleanses and conditions and my wife loves the smell. Bonus. – Shandor Jacobs

8. Sorbet Man Razor-glide Shave Gel, 59,95

The verdict:

Such a cool shaving gel! It really soothes my skin and makes it feel fresh after shaving. – Nelson Bukasa

9. Nivea Revitalising Body Cream, R47,95

The verdict:

Moisturising has never been my strong point. But in winter my skin really does get a bit dry, so I usually try a moisturiser. I have no idea what to look for, so here packaging comes into play for me. The Nivea Men Revitalising Body Cream seemed good, as I wanted to revitalise my skin. Since I have hair on my body I usually don’t like putting body creams on because when it mixes with one’s hair it does not always work. This cream was easy to put on and seemed to just melt into my skin. After a few days I noticed that my skin was also looking much better and was not dry at all. Definitely a product I will use again. – Ryan Manning

10. Nivea Men Active Clean Shower Gel, R49,95

The verdict:

For me a shower gel must smell good and do the job, which is give me a good clean feel and hopefully moisturise my skin with a little fragrance thrown in. I was not disappointed with this product. I found that after a few days my skin was feeling much better and didn’t have that dry winter texture. When I first opened it though I was a bit sceptical due to the look and texture of the actual gel. It has this silver/black look, almost like an oil. But it smelled good, so I gave it a try, and once it’s on it lathers nicely. So overall it is a product I will continue to use, and as a bonus, it is not just a body and face gel, but you can also use it for your hair. – Ryan Manning
